i only do it with nakhla. i basically sprinkle in the bowl then pack down pretty well until flush with the rim. then i'll add maybe 1/2 as much shisha that is in the bowl on top, pack, then throw foil over it. 3 coals with nakhla and you're golden

Check grams vid.

But yes the point is, to in fact, burn the shisha.

For me i like to do it because i get some thicker clouds and a little more pungent flavor.

All true except the point is to sear only the top layer, not actually burn it

I feel the point is to simply sear the top of the tobacco, but burning the shit out of it is also a viable option. If done correctly, which can take a bit of trial and error, it can produce some seriously intense flavor.

All preference I guess. My throat is sensitive when the shisha burns. There's a fine line between getting great clouds and burning the shisha. That's the trick for me to a great session, keeping it at the point where the clouds are huge but the shisha isn't burning. Personally, I believe anyone can get massive clouds and burn the shisha, but the taste goes downhill quickly.

That's actually the point of searing the top layer (the tobacco that touches the foil) to preserve the tobacco underneath it, if done correctly you'd get the intensity in flavor and smoke, as well as prolong your session.

It doesn't per say. The idea is to get the heat of the coals in more direct contact with the tobacco, that is what intensifies the flavor. The top seared layer acts as an insulator for the tobacco underneath.

It doesn't, the overall overpack does, I'm no scientist, but I know that it works , even without an overpack, when packing nakhla very dense and I mean very dense (below the rim) and applying enough heat to it will result in more flavor.

EDIT: what Dee said

Exactly. In fact I now use a dense pack below the rim instead of the overpack. The only drawback is that it can take a little longer to get the bowl going. It's easier to heat manage that way though.

how dense of a pack are we talking....like really pressing it into the bottom of the bowl?

Wouldn't this require a lot more tobacco?

I usually really pack it in there and yea you would need slightly more tobacco, but nothing major, I pack around 20-25 (maybe even less than 20, I don't have the scale to get a good measure, but a 50g sample will probably be good enough for 2 full sessions with some of the tobacco left over) grams in small egyptian or a vortex.

I would say, some people have reservations about packing mizo this way because it's wetter, but I've had no problem.

I only over pack Nakhla, but when I do.. I like to burn the shit out of it as well. Thicker clouds, harder buzz, and a bit of a sronger flavour. But, as you said Green, it's all a personal preference.

Just wanted to update, it was just single apple (i got two free 50g samples), although I've been trying to get some DA without buying 250g to try it and cant seem to find it anywhere. But back on topic, I overpacked the apple last night and it was way better. i didn't taste much apple over the anise but i still enjoyed the smoke. I think i will be smoking nakhla like this from now on

I overpack so its flush with the bowl rim when its all said and done...But I really pack it in there untill its very dense and no more tobacco can possibly fit into the bowl.then I really put the heat to it..to pack the tobacco that dense in a egyptian or other traditional style bowl and still have airflow you will need to adjust your hole poking tech.

I don't think I (or anyone else here) can give you a definitive answer to this question but I would guess that it's possible to get some tar if you truly start burning the tobacco.
