Default Newly Acquired Hookah =/

Hey everyone! I am new at this Hookah stuff. I was recently given a hookah from a friend. She tried to use it once, I think, and it didn't work. Well now I have it. It had the bowl grommet and a broken base grommet. No ball bearing or hose grommet. Went to a local smoke shop and got those 3 things, some tobacco, and a bowl screen. Came home and set everything up, lit the charcoal and got hardly any smoke. After researching on here I started testing for leaks and found that every place that is threaded is leaking. I don't know what to do now. Tried electrical tape and that worked for some parts. The steam unscrews into two parts then there are two more small pieces that are threaded, I'm guessing one of them is to hold the tray (which I am missing) and the other one it the part you put the bowl & grommet on. So far I have no leaks up to the tray holder, but cant get the other two sealed. Here are some pictures. I also have no idea what kinda of Hookah this is. Sorry for the long post. I hope I gave enough info! Thanks!

Well, first off that is a nice piece you got there. I would suggest using teflon tape on the threads, and maybe adding the electrical tape to the outside. Or perhaps using some kind of adhesive in the threads if you're not too concerned about taking it completely apart, and again maybe adding tape to the outside parts to help ensure a seal. These are just some thoughts right off hand. Hope it helps....

not sure what kind of hookah that is but it's a really nice rig, and yeah i'd try abt 3 wraps of teflon tape on areas where there wont be much or any heat, you could also try o-rings

i'd go with teflon tape on any of the threading that leaks as zero suggested, or if that's not enough you could always use blue loctite if you really dont want it to leak or unscrew easily :P (not red, that stuff is designed for engines etc)

i've also used wet paper towels for the bowl & hose fittings in the past. if they're still leaky for you give that a shot.

Is that red paint and then its etched down to the brass?

Probably Syrian rig....I ve been out of the game for a bit now though, so my hookah knowledge is dwindling.

I was going to suggest teflon tape and o-rings, both of which have been said. Just stop by a home depot, lowes, menards, ace, etc and pick em up.

Otherwise, if you can find some food safe, FDA/USF approved caulk like RTV102 or 108. RTV bonds to most things I m pretty sure... It won't bond to like polypropylene for example though.

That's deffinately some sort of Syrian, and as suggested before, I would go with teflon tape rather than electrical. And you should be able to pick up a try at a local shop around you.

Thanks for all of the replies! I'm glad to know its not a junker. There is a bad smell coming from the stem and I tried searching on here to get a "how to" on cleaning but it seems that there is no definitive answer on what to use to de-funk brass. I have tried a natural based dish soap that has grapefruit oil in it + warm water + brush but it is still funky =(. Any suggestions?

I'd suggest baking soda. My friend cleans his with pure lemon juice or some pure citrus juice/concentrate- I'll use this method for my washable hoses when i got some bad ghosting and let it air out- always does the trick for me.

I like to use a 60/40 mix of lemon juice and dish soap when cleaning my rigs. I've alwasy done it this way.. I use to work in a hookah bar down in Denton Tx. and it's the way we did it there.

Lemon juice usually works for some bad ghosting. haven't tried the 60.40 mix but it seems like a pretty sweet idea

avoid using soaps in your rig. A lemon juice/baking soda mix will work best w/out an aftertaste. And yes, that is infact a brass Syrian narghile. Shop some of the online vendors for a tray. you may have some luck.

i would get rid of that hookah screen and use foil on the bowl. that would have a lot to do with the lack of smoke.

Get o ring s for the threaded areas should be available at any hardware store just remember to get the right size it should just fit snugly the when you tighten the joints up don't over tighten this will give a better seal and prevent the o ring from distorting. If the thread is worn thread tape will work to help seal. a very nice hookah worth preserving.

Block the stem and pour mixture into it let it sit there to deep clean then rinse
