Default Nicotine content on the label

I'm curious as to what the .5% nicotine print really means. .5% of what? What's the measurement?

When I was using e-cigs, they label their e-juice/e-liquid with 0/8/12/24/36mg of nicotine. AFAIK, and I could be completely wrong on this, 1 normal cigarette contains ~1mg of nicotine. That kind of measurement makes sense to me.

Anyone know how much .5% nicotine is?

Tom

I'm pretty sure its by volume
i.e. if you have 100g of shisha then you have .5g of nicotine

The number on the packaging is NOT an accurate measure of the nicotine contents. It's only an estimate, or a reference so to speak. 0.5% means it's unwashed and 0.05% means washed. Still, it's no indication of the buzz you're going to get from the tobacco.

For example, both JM and Social Smoke use a very mild tobacco to produce their shisha. Even though they both estimate the nicotine contents of their products at 0.5%, which would mean that it's an unwashed product, I dare anyone to get a Nakhla or Tangiers-type buzz out of either one. Or any kind of significant buzz that is not related to CO poisoning/oxygen deprivation.

If all Nakhla tobacco products contain 0.5% nicotine (minus El Basha), then why does the Mizo line have a low buzz factor when the Sherazade line is so very potent? How come there's so much variation in buzz if the nicotine contents are exactly the same? The answer: the number on the box means very little and it's just there as a reference, or in some cases, to market the product (see Social Smoke). Nothing more, nothing less.

I hear what your saying Dakins.
So maybe its the % in the actual tobacco, not the shisha as a whole. The buzz is different for different products because of the amount of glycerin, molasses and such.
Then again, this is all speculation

They should just indicate "Washed" vs. "Unwashed" or something to that effect.

Thanks guys!

Well, regulations are in place in most western countries to force cigarette manufacturers to print nicotine, tar and CO information on their products' labels. Why it's applied to shisha tobacco as well, I honestly can't tell.

Social Smoke, as a company, has been pretty outspoken about the fact the their tobacco is unwashed.

on shisha tobacco, the .5 simply means unwashed

i have no idea how to figure out how strong the tobacco actually is.
Is the buzz based on nicotine?
or is it that the .5% being unwashed means whatever else would get washed away wont and whatever that is that doesn't get washed away comes in different strengths as well

JM's is actually 0.05 Dakins, not to blatantly correct you in a rude manor, just saying. I'm a big JM's fan. I'm also pretty sure their stuff is washed.

I don't think the buzz is an accurate way to judge the nicotine level for shisha. I only get a buzz when I chain it. Even when I first started I didnt get buzzes from unwashed tobacco. Keep in mind i dont smoke cigs or anything of that nature.

its also virtually impossible to ensure that tobacco will consistently have the same amount of nicotine. all kinds of factors come into play, the weather, the soil, the strain of tobacco that fertilized this tobacco this particular time. to many factors to guarantee that the number on the box can possibly be legitimate.

They must have changed it recently. I also have a container of Hookah Freak with 0.5% printed on it

It means jack squat!
