Default Etching a hookah base.

I've recently stripped the paint off my glitter base (thought it'd look good just clear, but it looks like a damn milk bottle), so at first I was thinking of spray painting some silver rings on it covered with a few coats of clear finish, but then I thought why not something permanent like etching.

So my question is, how safe would this be (I mean I'm sure it'll be fine, since even the thinnest of glass panes comes out fine, but just making sure, because of a few tiny bubbles in the vase) and how abrasive would an acid etch compound (armour etch) would be on the base?

Dont know if I'd try this........Why not pick up some paints from a hobby stre and have arts and crafts time........theres always stickers and decals....ohh and dont forget you could bedazzle...lol...........

Anouther thing that would be cool is to do a rope thingy on it....I worked with a guy that would do these cool rope designs on bottles of all different shapes the cooler bottles we could find he wanted for his craftyness...this kinda thing would be sick done right on a hookah vase...I'll see if I can find some info or a pic of what I'm talking about

The guy I new who did this kinda art was a real master of it he would use smaller "all natural" rope and due really eloborite designs with the webbing.....I found this just to give an idea of what I;m talking about.....Damnit why didnt I think to have him do up one of my hookah vasses when I had the chance.....Seems pretty cool I might have to give this a shot myself http://www.selfmadesailor.com/index....e-bottle.htm&2

I think etching would work fine, but I do like the rope idea. You could do some color coordinating with you hoses.

Yeah 2apples, that'll take me a few years of practice I love how he starts and finishes those designs, looks very intricate (especially the bottom of bottle #2).

I've watched a few vids of people using that acid etch on glass christmas tree decorations, so I think a thicker glass base should hold itself intact, at least in theory as I've never done that before.

Thanks for that link 2apples. When I used to work at a marina in Florida I used to do some ropework but nothing quite that intricate. I think I'll give that a try myself. I really liked the look of it. Smoke happy.

Well, if you're not sure of what etching you want, you could always use a "Glass Duster" spray with a stencil.

It should give the same effect, and you should be able to clean it off if you're unhappy with the design at any point.

Not sure what a glass duster spray is, if you mean the glass frosting spray paint, I've tried that before on a mirror, and the results weren't that great, it pretty much comes off every time you clean it with water.

I'm not new to cutting stencils and working with them, I've modded quiet a few projects with a custom paint, including stenciling, layering and stuff like that. I've just never worked with sand blasting or acid/chemical etching before, seems pretty simple though, at least the compound part, I plan on testing it on scraps before I apply anything to the base.

Actually have a few designs in mind, nothing too intricate, but we'll see, I'll keep this thread updated

I think a stencil with a light mist of white paint from a spray can would give it that etched/frosted look

I've considered spray paint before, but the combination of smooth glass and variations in temperature doesn't sound that great. I want something more permanent, where I wouldn't be paranoid of the paint chipping or peeling every time I'd want to clean it or use ice in the base on a humid summer day.

the etching compound is not all that abrasive use masking tape to do your design and apply with a paint brush to get good crisp lines but the longer you leave it on the deeper it will go i would say prob. no longer than 15 mins depending how pronounced you want the design and how thick the glass is

Id try etching... I never looked into this but just watching the few youtube videos on it... Seems really simple. Seems as easy as just using a stencil. and as a Nice touch compared to just painting something.

Watching these videos they make it look extremely easy.

If you think you can do it free hand a Dremel tool looks like like decent method as well..

Ok well, the stencils are cut out and already on the base, gonna start applying the compound in a few, will also more than likely start a new thread with whatever pics I've taken
