Default What is up with stems on hookahs?

So I have been going to hookah lounges for the past 4 years and every hookah there has the same thing as the 3 I have at home.

It seems that all hookah stems barely go into the base liquid. I usually fix this by adding a piece of tubing or something. Why do all the companies that make hookahs decide to gyp everyone of the extra cooling from the water.

Prime example

My Sahara Odyssey has an extra long stem so it goes very far into the water. A long with a ton of ice, so long as the shisha doesn't burn too quickly, my friends and I always get a cool, relaxing smoke.

I'm not sure how that would be a problem. Ideally you only want about 1/2" submerged in the water regardless of tobacco quality. If you want more cooling then throw some ice in the vase, or that fine looking chiller on top of that kickass Syrian rig.

I don't have that problem with either of my hookahs. They both get inserted to a depth of about 1/2" to 3/4", which is sufficient for them to operate properly. I add ice sometimes to make the smoke cooler if I want or I put the water in the vase and put the vase into the freezer for about 20 minutes before smoking it. That method really works well. Smoke happy.

need about 1/2 inch of stem submerged for hookah to work just add more water most hookahs are not specifically designed for the base they are sold with thus the stem problem

If you only leave it in the freezer for about 20 minutes it just chills the water down very well. Doesn't get cold enough to harm the glass in the vase. If you left it there overnight you might have a problem. But, it would most likely only crack if you were, for some odd reason, heating the vase itself. Just coming from the freezer to room temp air shouldn't hurt it at all unless there is some kind of flaw in the vase to begin with. Smoke happy.

I always find this weird why people always want cooler and cooler smoke, when the way your throat is designed is to warm up the air before it gets to your lungs.

cool smoke is more appealing then hot smoke when it's in your mouth and throat. sure the throat heats it up or whatever, but at least until that point it's nicer cold.

I have noticed the same issue of the stem not going far enough into the base.. I added a defuser on mine to extend the stem a bit.. I find on some hookahs the stem is so high up that u have to fill the water too high and it splashes the water up into where the hose connects... this rusts a non washable hose much faster.

just my opinion.. not all hookahs have the short stem.

I thought mine was short too. I has a generic 22" Mod hookah, but I fill it to about 1/2" stem in water. Works fine enough, but I could use a diffuser.

well you only want the stem to go 1/2-1 inches into the water or else it will be really hard to pull. Having more space for the air above the water doesn't matter, but having more water below the stem is useful because it has more so it doesn't heat up as easily. Thats my guess.
