Default Beer or milk instead of water?

Hey all!
I'm new to this forum and I already have a few questions. Me and my friend were smoking on the hookah a few weeks ago. But we didn't have any water, so we used beer. The taste was just the same as far as I can remember. But is it bad for the hookah? And instead of water, could you use milk? My friend said it gives it a 'fuller' and creamy taste. Is this true? Did somebody try it out? Please tell me, I'm curious haha. I'm going to buy my own hookah in a few weeks. I hope you guys have an answer for my questions!

I've heard that milk makes the clouds fluffier and bigger.... whether that's true or not, I don't know. I don't think it'll make a big difference.
A friend of mine put Vodka in his base before, but it didn't make a difference. He didn't get drunk or had a different taste. Stupid idea on his part.

Beer has a bad habbit of bubbling up really bad, milk does the same but its not as bad. Its certainly not bad for the hookah just make sure you clean it. Also many people use milk. I agree that it gives it a cleaner taste, but I don't like the bubbles. Try using a small amount of Milk in a base of water, this cuts down on the bubbling.

People also say milk makes bigger clouds and takes away from taste, same for ice water... It's all about preference and experimenting.

Ive used vodka before. The fumes will give you a nice buzz. Probably less than healthy though XD And Id hate to see a coal chunk fall down the down pipe, (phunnel bowl users).

hahaha Good thing most Vodkas aren't strong enough to burn. I do wonder what would happen if the liquid in your base would catch on fire... either the glass would break, the fire would go out due to lack of Oxygen, or it would just burn like a candle in a bottle...

Sambooka did a video a while back on cleaning your rig with beer, but as for using it in the base I have no idea. The milk argument has been made a few times but if you do decide to use milk then you have to water it down because if you don't the milk bubbles up and will get into your hose.
From my experience the best thing by far to use is water. Milk, beer, soda, juice and alcohol all have an assortment of problems that water doesn't. Milk can go sour if any residue is left in the base/stem. Beer or juice would likely leave some left over residues unless cleaned very throughly. Lastly, soda is carbonated with CO2 which is going to be released as the bubbles from the draw will agitate the soda. This is probably the biggest issue because CO2 will poison you if you inhale too much. This being said, if you do use soda make sure that it is flat and is no longer carbonated to avoid this problem. Some people like to put alcohol into the base because they think that it will add to the "buzz" but unless you can get buzzed off fumes then I remain unconvinced. Water is tried and true and has been used for hundreds of years.

thanks for all the replies! However, I'm just going to try out milk someday. Just to see/taste the difference. I think I won't use any beer or something, we just used it because we didn't have any water haha.

I've used milk one time, mixed with water, and I THINK the clouds were nicer, but that could just be my imagination. You could taste the milk muting the flavor though, at least in my opinion.

I've used lemon juice in water before and it did definately add a lemony taste to the smoke. But, all in all, I prefer to use just plain, old water. Easy to clean, works well. But in the end, pretty much anything you can drink you could put in the vase if you wanted to. If you feel the pull, try it and then do a review on it so the rest of us can learn from/with you. Smoke happy.

My friends have tried smoking with milk in the base, it makes the smoke really thick! You'll just need to make sure you clean your hookah really good afterward!

Milk or anything else is a waste of time and money.

Hookahs are meant to be used with water and water works best.

Some people seem to think that milk/ice/soysauce/whatever adds to the clouds/smoothness/thickness/whatever but really all you're doing is making a mess of your pipe and diminishing the flavor.

Coyotero is just kidding around, soy sauce makes for a super smooth smoke, and clouds atleast double in size. Flavor is also intensified greatly, I haven't smoke without kikoman for about a month now. It also cleans your pipe due to acidity.
