Default Pennsylvania tax coming?

I work at a non profit in Pittsburgh and got an e-mail the other day asking us all to make phone calls to our representatives to try and pass a bill to extend funding for medicaid and similar programs. The organization I work for provides services to disabled people in the community, so I was ready to make some calls.

However, after doing some more digging, one of the things they are tacking on to this (among quite a lot of things) legislation is a tax on Other Tobacco Products (OTP). They are proposing a 30% tax, supported by all the usual fear mongering about healthcare costs and under age tobacco use through "gateway" products.

Here's the "fact sheet", although quite a few things on there are probably much less then factual.

If this comes to pass it will just encourage more people to buy online, as the lack of tax will offset any discouraging shiping costs.

This is getting ridiculous. Smokers are becoming second class citizens.

Is there an easier product to tax besides tobacco?...

It's addictive and has a negative stigma associated with it. I'm trying to think of why the government wouldn't tax it...not having much luck.

Gateway products is another of those much overused terms that should be stricken from usage in the english language. Just a nice little catch phrase that the anti-smoking mongers can grab onto whenever they feel like jumping up onto another soap box. Smoke happy.

30% seems ridiculous. i just looked up VA's, and we only pay 10% on OTP. just out of curiosity, what kind of prices are you paying for 250g with no additional tobacco tax? also, how high is the PA cigarette tax?

What non-profit do you work for? I don't really see a point to this, most people smoke cigarettes anyway. Not to be an ass but I think if they really want to tax something they should tax carbonated beverages, too many fat kids with diabetes these days.

Most people smoke cigarettes anyways?...This is just flat out incorrect, unless youre from Spain.

Yes as in all tobacco users collectively. I'd say that a majority of tobacco users who use on a regular basis are cigarette users within the US , especially in PA. True there may be people who use multiple forms of tobacco but its pretty safe to say that for a good number of people one of those forms are cigarettes. I'm not saying cigars and pipe tobacco don't have a large following, just that cigarettes have a larger one. Simply because they are easily attainable and relatively inexpensive ( a good bit of their price is tax). My logic behind that statement.

Next thing their going to do is put ALL tobacco sales in government control, just like liquor and wine. Really wouldn't be surprised if this happens eventually.

Pretty soon we're going to have ATF helicopters out there spotting tobacco plants.
