Default Coal Issues???

I am using quicklights until my Coco's come in, and I've been noticing that even once I get them completely lit they are black when I ash them. Is this typical, or am I having a problem?

My smoke is also getting quite harsh, quite quick. I use Al Fakher with an egyptian bowl (my vortex cracked) and 1 layer of foil (regular, not HD)

What are your suggestions for thicker smoke and less harshness?

Thanks, smoke happy

Do you also use the windcover? Maby its getting to hot. Also check the amount of Ql's. Maby you could try a little less. And what brand of coals do you use?

HD foil makes a big difference, too. And how you pack the bowl, whether loose and light or tight and overpacked. Tight and overpaced will give you more smoke and stronger flavor but you have to sear the top layer in before beginning to smoke it or you'll get a nasty, burned tobacco taste. 2apples has a great post on here showing how he overpacks and once I tried it I haven't gone back. Here is the link to his post. http://www.hookahpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15695 Smoke happy.

How big are your QL's? 40 or 33 mm? I use 2x 33 mm coals, or 1x 40mm with windcover and that's enough for me. The bottom of the coals sometimes turns black again after a few mins. But then I just pick them up, blow a bit till they are red again and put them on.

I usualy leave the ashes on the coal so they trap the heat. I you dont move them you wont have the problem of ashes falling in your shisha. At least I never had a problem with it.

Everytime I smoke I choose to use 2 layers of regular foil. I personally feel I can manage heat better like that. Your set up seems okay, for the information you've given us. I'll +1 the above posts as to a more in depth description on your set up. It could be a few things.

1. Tobacco touching the foil.
2. Heat Managment
3. Coal Issue

My guess it would be a combination of packing technique and foil. I'd first try and double layer your regular foil, while making sure your tobacco isn't touching the foil in any way....well a little wouldn't hurt.

You use a Wind Cover to trap the heat.

If you ash the Coal, you will get more of the heat. If you dont ash, you are trapping more of the heat inside the ash and not to the tobacco.
