instant lite has chemicals added to help the coal ignite faster natural are made of untreated wood or coco fibers and are flavorless when used where as the instant lite coals leave a burned rubber or gas smell and taste when used!! if you borrow a quick lite and a natural and light them individually and smell them and use them on your hookah (not at the same time) youll know what i mean!! my hubby go tm equick lites fo rmy first coals and i hated them they sparked too mych when lit smelled an dtasted like burned rubber and the tobbacco was permiated with the stinch an dflavor after 30 mins o fsmokeing!! i now use kanaras which are coconut coals and i have coconaras for when the kanaras are out thye are the same stuff but i heard coconaras have less ash an d47 bucks for 324 coals is a good deal!! but like i said you can do the experiment on your own and see if you have the same reaction many of us do!!

Quick lights would be better for beginners because they are much easier to set up and if you're just getting into hookah then you probably won't notice the difference yet. My first box was 3 kings instant light and they were fine when I begun, but now I use coconaras which are just amazing.

Quick lights
Pros:
-lighting more by setting them on fire and they catch and light quickly
-easy to clean up (because they dissolve in watter you can wash them down your sink)
Cons:
-they make a small oder and taste
-they don't last too long

Natural coals
Pros:
-no taste or oder
-last a long time / hotter for longer
Cons:
-annoying to light (you have to heat them up instead of just lighting)
-don't dissolve easily so you have to cool them down and throw them away

Hope that helped

The natural trend is to start out with the easier, more convenient quicklights then trying and using the better natural coals.

Start with quicklights - getting to understand heat management and your favorite tobacco flavors.

If you have a coil burner, give naturals a try at some point and don't look back. they are far superior to any quicklight.

Quicklites are good to have on hand in case you run out of naturals, or if you bring your hookah to parties. a lot more convenient to use a lighter in stead of going into whoevers house and using their stove

It also depends on where you plan to smoke. If you will readily have a stove, definitely look into natural coals, because they are top notch.

But as bry said, typically people start with quick lights to get the hang of things, then move onto naturals.

Personally I don't usually have access to a stove (smoke outside or in a dorm room) and therefore I tend to use quick lights. Not the best, but didn't want to invest in a portable single coil burner while constantly worrying about refilling the propane etc.

As my friends and I travel around with our hookahs, quick lights are the method of choice. I really don't mind them too much, though I know some people hate the taste. It's akin to eating meat that's been cooked on a gas grill vs. charcoal.

Natural coals all the way! Quicklites tastes horrible and they don't last as long as most natural coals.

ALWAYS NATURAL... ALWAYS!!!

I started with golden quick lights to get my bearings and now moved to coconaras, I still have lots of quicklights if I need to light in a hurry because they are definitely pretty good and have a min. of smell/taste.

I would use the quick lights to start out with, then you can try the natural!

I think mostly everyone starts off with quicklights. Then again mostly everyone starts off with quicklights and then switch to naturals and never look back. It's really up to you.

I agree.. Start with QLs to test flavors and heat management.. Once you have that down, naturals are the way to go.

The benefits of Naturals, even if you put it out with water, once it dries. You can use it again.

Naturals all the way, only problem is that no one sells them by my place, or anywhere that i know of here in the most Republican state run by a Democrat, Washington.

Pro's and cons of NATS imo:

+ healthier
+ they last longer
+ no taste

- take time to lit up

Basically, the only con I can think of is the time to lit up.
I started with nats. Easy to light up, and ready to go. But if you care a lot about health when smoking, go for the nats.
