Default Got a few questions....

1.) Does putting ice in the base make the smoke thicker but also takes away some flavor?

2.) How can i make a small bowl (about a little more than .5 inches in depth in the actual bowl and about 1.75 inches in diameter in the bowl) last for a long time (no burned tobacco) and yet get big hits

1. Yes
2. slow cook it and heat manage it with a windcover. It cooks faster when your smoking it, get the tobacco going before you start smoking by putting more coals on than you should and just waiting then taking off the extra coals and rotating before you smoke

also depending on which tobacco it is, you should pack it a certain way, and if smoke not taste is the most important thing to you, get soupy tobacco

1) From what i've heard and seen, yes it can make your smoke thicker, but as far as taking away taste, i haven't noticed it.
2) It depends on the bowl type, if you have a standard & your using a tin piece, you could just peak in from time to time and adjust your shisha. But ariberns is right, soupy=cloudy, and starting with an extra coal isnt a bad idea either.

1. The tongue and olfactory receptors (Those things that pick up aromas) are not as effective at picking out flavors in cold things.

If you want my honest opinion, trying to cool the smoke is a pointless endeavor. A pipe of respectable size with properly managed coals will smoke cool and smooth with room-temperature water in the bottle.

2. Learning to manage your coals and windcover can help a bowl last longer, but a bowl of a given size is going to have a limited lifespan.

Ice can definitely make the smoke thicker but more importantly cooler.

Why is it so important to have smoke thick or cool?

I have never understood. I think its more of a sensation from the shisha. I used day-old room temperature water when smoking blue mist, and it felt cool because of the tobacco. I think the mints especially, will feel cool. And I have never noticed the smoke being any thicker as a result of the ice. It comes down to bowl setup and heat management. Nothing more.
