There is this vid of this guy making a homemade stem on youtube:

I haven't tried it myself, but I plan to since my stem brush is wearing out. It looks like a really good homemade stem brush that will really work

A gun cleaning kit might help.

Be sure to get one with a wire brush attachement for the rust.

Yeah, I would say just get a gun cleaning kit, or an instrument cleaning kit ... either one of those would work fine, if not better!

I really don't recommend using vinegar for the stem. I was using it on mine for a while and regret it. I got some horrible smells in the stem. I had to soak it for like 4 hours in hot water and scrub the day lights out of it to get the smell out.

You can't go wrong with lemon juice. It's pretty cheap at the store and it lasts a long time. That stuff pretty much saved my stem

Doesnt vinegar create some reaction with certain metals? I would use lemon juice.

I think it was starting to corrode the inside of my stem. I only started using it because I was out of lemon juice. Now i know not to hehe

That's weird! It usually does the opposite for me ^_^ and I always rinse it out completely right after

Yeah, stay away from the vinegar in your stem, it has negative effects ... just stick to the lemon juice and for an added kick, try adding some baking soda.

Cheers!

Yeah, it has a high acidic pH. Same with any form of alcohol. Stick with the naturals, baking soda and lemons.
Goto Home Depo, Lowes, Wal-Mart, (Is ACE Hardware stores still around?) or any Hardware store and grab a stainless pipe cleaner, it will get off anything in side that stem with a little bit of elbow grease. Good thing is they are cheap! Maybe a 1.25 at the most. They also might carry the plastic pipe cleaners, which is good if you have a plated stem. If you have damaged plating go with the stainless, because exposed metal is just going to get worse in terms of corrosion and holding flavors.

saxophone cleaning kit,or flute, or trumpet, they all have the tools to clean your hookah. don't get a clarinet though. You can also get a saxophone cleaning swab, if that doesn't come with the kit you would buy.

Instrument cleaning kit and gun cleaning kit are great ideas I never would have thought of that. Why can't you order a brush if you're going through all that trouble?
