Default Coal Lighting Tips!

Well, basically, I just take a coffee can, and cut out both lids.

Then I place the can over coals I am heating up on the stove ... this kinda helps with two things:
1. Helps to concentrate the heat on the coals, thereby heating them faster
2. For quicklites, it helps to keep the black soot from going all over the place

Just thought I would share this technique, since this is what I use on an electric range stove top

Gotta any coal lighting tips? Post em' here...

I stand my quicklights on their sides like dominoes. All of the coals surfaces get nice and red and I can pack the bowl without having to mind the coals.

use use a little 8 dollar burner i got from walmart. No matter if i use naturals, japs, quicklights, i stick them on there, and let them heat up while i go aboutloading my bowl, cleaning it, etc.

As for the coffee can trick, i might have to do that as my bookcase (in the stash pictures) has to be wiped down like every night that i smoke! lol

I had a burner, but it died.. (literally, i was doing up some japs and it turned off, never to turn on again.. Opened it up, cant see anything wrong, just wont start)
Now I just use quicklights and my Zippo lighter.

I use a little butane torch for lighting the coals. Its made by Bernz-O-Matic, not quite sure of the model though. I bought it from Home Depot and it came with a little attachment for soldering too. It works great for my JPN silvers.

I guess a culinary torch would work just the same, this one looks a lot like the torch I have.

I tend to use my gas stove or this 3-flame torch lighter we bought cheap (but use high end fuel).

if I'm out and need to light a Japan coal, I have a tea-light with me. Lit it and hold over, takes freaking forever, but safer than holding lighter (which gets HOT).

inter- NICE TORCH!! I have a benzo- one too, but it's a handheld little blue and silver one with a bendy neck. works decent.

sami- i know how you feel about lighters, i was lighting a jap coal one day, with a plastic see through lighter from the gas station..... that thing melted and the melted plastic seared to my hand...oh that sucked so hard... i couldn't peel the plastic off@!!!! ouch

* as for other lighting techniques, besides, lighters, torches, and stove tops, anybody else got any ideas about how to light? I heard something about people starting to use lightbulbs or some kind of energy to light shisha instead of coals. wonder how that's going.?

Lightbulbs?
I've alway's wondered if that would work, like bowl-sized heat lamps.
Or maybe like a heated coil or something to sit on the foil..?
If it hasnt been tested yet, we should get on this lol.
Make some bank! hehe

Hey guys,

I've tried a lot of different methods for lighting coals. Since I mostly use quicklights, I don't have an issue with trying to concentrate heat, but using that can over the stove sounds like a great way to heat up any coal quickly.

This is what I do....I grasp the coals horizontally with Egyptian tongs (they hold better) and use one of those long grill lighters (otherwise my hands can get burned), I light the coals over a deep laundry sink, so all the residue lands in the sink not all over the coach/table, then I wave the charcoal lightly while blowing on it to get it glowing red all over, thatís it!! I find that if the charcoal is completely red then you don't have to milk the hookah as long.

Hope this helps
