Default Natural Coals.

As most of you know, Natural Coals are supposedly praised for their "No Smell When Lighting", and "No Taste Added". It's all over the Exotica Boxes, the Coco-Nara boxes.

On H-S, you can read the descriptions of all the Natural Coals. "Very Clean, Enhances the Taste of Your Tobacco". Yet, when i had Exotica problems, i talked to H-S and was told that "All Natural Coals give off a smell when lighting and some taste when using them". ON the Exotica box it says the exact opposite. False Advertisement? Maybe. I have not once had a box of Exoticas NOT smell while lighting them. They always smell like burning charcoal and it makes me sick to my stomach. As for the taste while using them, i did ans experiment. They don't smell when fully lit, i will give them that. I had been using Golden QL on a bowl, they add no flavor. I proceeded to switch the coals with Exoticas. One of my friends, who has never used natural coals, says "Wow, i can really taste the wood flavor!". Those exact words. I couldn't taste it so much, i had been using them for months.

Now, Coco-Nara. They smell almost WORSE when lighting them. The heavy sent lingers for 10 minutes after they are fully lit. No one can even hit because they are afraid of the coal taste. I can't get myself to start it up because my stomach is saying "No Way".

I have never heard anyone (who is experienced) say anything about this. The only time i have heard anything is during the whole Exotica Problem. But i get them with every single Nat. coal i light.
Are people just not admitting it? Am i the only one who gets a sickening smell?

Have you ever seen a review where it's "No smell When Lighting!" or seen a post that says the same? I have only seen those. never seen the other.

Hmmm I dunno...All the naturals I have tried have always said "no smell" but there is while lighting but not when its fully lit...Maybe that's what they meant? eck who know.

I haven't experienced that bad taste with Exoticas yet...thank the Lord that I never ran into bad batches! lol ^_^

I am sorry but everything that is burned will give off some sort of odor. I have recently gone back to the good ole trusty QL's, they have NEVER failed me.

i've always smelled them when they're lighting, the smell sticks in the house for as long as a couple hours... but i've never smelled them once they're fully lit on the bowl and i've NEVER tasted anything at all... with QLs i taste A LOT, it's disgusting. but never with exoticas

Exoticas to me smell kinda like an incense while ther are heating up. After they are red hot they give off no smell or taste that I can detect. I used to think QL's didn't impart any flavor, but after using Exotica's for awhile a QL tastes nasty.

I am a big fan of the Exoticas, I use them most of the time, although I have recently been using some Al Hambra (olive wood coals) ... I like those too! (I am a big fan of naturals)

Both put off a smell when lighting, but both do not impose any taste on my hookah smoking session.

Husky is right, anything you burn is going to give off a smell ... after they are lit though is what will matter most to an individual personal preference ... use what you are comfortable with.

All coals smell when you light them but good ones give off no smell once fully lighted. They also impart less taste to your shisha which is of course great. I don't use QLs any more and my sessions are better as a result.

I get a discusting smell too when lighting my Exotica's. It's definetly there. And I think they're a little over-hyped in the whole flavor aspect. They taste no different than when I smoke with a Golden Coal. And I'm not the only one that noticed this, 2 of my fellow smokers did as well...
