Burning your tobacco and tasting bad is the least important part of using grilling charcoal. It's toxic. It will kill you.

This.

There's a reason why every bag of bbq coals you buy will have it plainly printed in bold on the bag to never grill indoors or under a tent or something because of the carbon monoxide emitted from the coals.

It depends on what kind of bbq charcoal... If it is all natural like the sticks, then they are fine, but they take forever to light and are harder to stay lit. I have used natural bbq charcoal before, no chemicals or anything added.

I remember hearing one time that you can use various non-toxic woods (I think Rosewood, and Oak would work) and cut them into nuggets of sorts, dry them in an oven for like an hour, and then use them as temp coals. I could be wrong on the types of wood, but you should check around on youtube, or the forums to see if anyone else has more information on it.

As long as it's all natural wood charcoal with no additives (aka quick lighting), the it's fine.
What do you folks think bulk charcoal is? What do you think people used before 'hookah charcoal' was invented?

Well, when he says "Barbecue Charcoal", the first thing that comes to mind (that I can assume he's talking about) is the grilling coal with additives. That stuff will straight up give you monoxide poisoning.

Always remember that even though it may not be quick start charcoal it can still be toxic if it's made from reclaimed wood or scrap lumber. If you want to use bulk charcoal use high quality fruit wood charcoal made for high end grill use. Otherwise you can't be sure what kind of wood is in there.

natural hardwood lemon wood is the best...but like some said thats what you read on the label...they will say its scrap wood made of several kinds...I havent heard of anyone dying from it...they are somewhat hard to light up coz they pop out lit coal around the burner...but definitely dont use the brickets / briquettes

see, this is the part that worries me as I have heard (yes that means it's a rumor. Yes I am ok with repeating it with forewarning) that grilling coal burns hotter and in turn may just ruin your tobacco.

Depends what kind of tobacco you are smoking and... I think it depends on the type of natural bbq charcoal you decide to use. The one I used was actually perfect I stacked them up on the whole bowl and it was smoking great

You also have to consider that a lot of the modern Briquettes have chemicals that assist in both ignition and heat. These chemicals produce a lot of carbon monoxide (smoking anything will cause you to inhale some carbon monoxide. In fact, being outside causes you too) which can cause carbon monoxide poisoning which can lead to death (I say can, because poisoning can be treated medically/naturally if you're lucky). BBQ charcoals (natural or not) would likely cause a BBQ flavor to be added to the session, especially if you're using briquettes. Borax (used in charcoals for ignition) is used in pesticides, detergent, fertilizer, and some medicines, and the same can be said about sodium nitrate. You also run the risk of petroleum products in the coals.

Essentially what I'm getting at is natural coals should be the ONLY thing you use to smoke tobacco from a shisha. Either make your own, or buy some. But if you're talking any kind of mainstream grilling briquettes (like HW said with Kingsford coals) you run into some major health risks.

I'm sure there are grilling coals out there that are natural, but I don't know enough about them to really say anything on it, just be safe and smart about it.

You can use all natural grilling charcoal but make sure there are no additives and the wood is non-toxic. My dad actually grills with some stuff thats almost identical to AF lemonwood charcoal just a little denser.
