Default Diffusers - who and how many use them?

Most people here will know what a diffuser is - a small piece of plastic or other material, with many small holes or slots in them, that break up the bubbles/air flow thru the downstem of the hookah.

Now, how many people use them?

Do you notice any difference in smoke? Taste?

Did you go for the "homemade" versions or did you buy one?

If you bought one, where - which type?

If you made one, perhaps post either here or in the "DIY section"

Let me start, I have two DIY diffusers - one on my Old E and one for my Small Opal.

On Old E - all it did was silence the bubbling sound. Didn't notice any increase in smoke or taste. In fact it became annoying and we stopped using it. I like the bubbling sound.

On Opal, it does make a difference. Old E is 33", Opal is 17". It cut back on the bubbles in both cases (which helped prevent water in the smaller hookah's hose) but in the smaller hookah I have noticed a smoke increase and a flavor increase. I was mildly surprised.

I will post my instructions for making one in the DIY section - as not to distract

I have never used one, BUT I do have a couple of those Guinness balls to be made into a diffuser. I am going to follow your instructions, and make one. I will let you know how it goes

i always use my herba diffuser. mostly for the fact that it filters the smoke through more water (and also i can put more water in the base without it messing up the draw). also i enjoy the silent hookah my KM was so loud! now i can watch movies and smoke without having the tv on full volume

It's funny you mention the volume thing...that's exactly why I made one lol.
When we watch tv or movies and smoke, i would wait till the loud parts to drag...got tired of it and made a diffuser out of the rubber foot of a microphone stand nearby
It worked pretty well but i dont reccomend getting a mic stand, results weren't that great haha.

But does it really do anything except silence your hookah? I dont see how it can filter out stuff.

I know some folks swear by em.
I've never tried a "real" one per se,
or made a good mod version...
But it's not so much that the diffuser filters anything itself,
but that the smaller & more numerous bubbles are filtered/cooled rapidly through the water,
making for a cooler smoke. I'm told ^_^

On my larger hookahs, all I notice is less noise. On the smaller one, I did notice alittle more taste and improvement on smoke.

I tested it with the same shisha, same hookah, same coals - everything. Just a small improvement, but it was there. I think for the most part it does help with splashing and noise.

PS: careful with using a diffuser and milk! I swear it makes MORE bubbles!

Lactose Intolerant = no moo juice

I haven't had a glass of milk in 21 years...

Just pointing out since teh diffuser makes the bubbles smaller - it tend to make milk bubbles worse - even a TBSP of milk made so much it got in the hose (on the small 17").
