Default Smoking Hookah in Iraq, what it is like!

I work in Iraq. After dinner each night, the Iraqis I work with, set up a hookah. Smoking with these guys is a unique experience! I always use a plastic mouth piece, God knows what kind of mouth cooties these guys have.

I bought a two-hose appliance, and they like to use it. I bought some AlFakher golden apple tobacco, and they think its the best they ever smoked. They are using it up rapidly.

They sit around and talk Arabic for hours. I just look interested, and puff on the hose. I may get a photo and post it here.

This is Nepalese New Year. We have several Nepalese Gurkha Guards working for us. This afternoon, the Nepalese had a ritual slaughter of a goat. We called the goat "Osama". They tied him down, and took a machete, and slit his throat. They collected his blood in a steel pan.

The goat will be gutted, and the meat stripped, and chopped into chunks. The meat will be cooked, and stewed with vegetables and curry powder.

Tonight, we will set up the hookah, and eat goat curry stew with rice, and set up a stereo, and ring in the new year.

Life in Iraq, I love it!!!!!

(PS Photos will follow)

Listen, Don't believe everything you see on CNN. I work with Iraqi technicians everyday. These guys are friendly, and work hard. They are risking their lives and their families lives, for working with the Americans.

We have security guards from Nepal (A small country in the Himalayas). The Gurkhas are tough, and fierce, they will take their machetes and rip the guts out of anyone who tries to break into our work area.

Very few ordinary Iraqis support the goons and private armies that roam the streets. Most Iraqis are glad the Americans are here, and that Saddam is gone.

MMMMM Goat is tasty! I had some one time at work. A lady I worked with that used to live in Trinidad brought in some curried goat. It was very tasty similar in taste to venison in my opinion. Sounds like a good time had by all. Osama the goat! LOL

Curry and goat, and hookah! That sounds like some good times! I am being honest ...

yeah, don't believe everything the media produces on tv, a lot of it is put out there to scare people and create ratings ...

you are correct... goat tastes very similar... my friend goes hunting all the time and taste of meat is very comparable.

I haven't been to Iraq in quite a while an since the U.S. has destroyed the country to benefit Israel and the oil industry I doubt i'll be back any time soon.

When I was in Baghdad before the invasion I enjoyed drinking coffee at a book shop and and smoking Serbetli Black while watching the endless stream of people argue about literature the impact of sanctions and local events. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to do much smoking with the locals then.

It sounds like cemab4y got to have a much better time although I can't say i'd want to change places with him.

I have been in this country for 2 years and three months, and I have never been to Baghdad. I have lived out in the boondocks on military camps.

Basically my time was spent in a couple of big cities.

I never spent much time in the countryside ( not much chance of selling food and beverage processing equipment in little villages) but I did go to a marsh region as the regional governor was supposedly up for buying water treatment equipment and I found out that the locals (called the al hwar Arabs) had their own culture and although they were supposedly dissidents oppressed by the Ba'athist regime I saw no signs of strife and had no problem entering or leaving the area.

I always wanted to learn about the Yazidi and since I did spend time in Mosul I got see the wonderful tomb of Sheikh Adi although I understand that the Chermera temple is more impressive but I never got to see it. I also found out that the Yazidi are secretive and have no interest talking to outsiders and that everyone else views them as "devil worshipers" which sounds wacky.

You're lucky because you've gotten a better chance to find out more about normal, rural culture and meet typical people. Almost everyone I dealt with were Western Educated, urbane types and all of them were ba'athists. Nice, smart people but hardly a reflexion of the rural heartland.

I hope you stay safe and learn some cool stuff.
