Default Any safety ideas?

I picked up a great idea, from someone. He uses four unglazed brown 12" square floor tiles, on the table, set up like this:

A B
C D

Then he sits the hookah right on the center point. That way if a stray coal or spark drops off the hookah, it will burn away harmlessly, and not damage the table. Sometimes the "low-tech" solution is the best.

I once dropped a hot coal into the wastepaper basket, and started a fire. Now I keep an old non-aerosol cough-spray bottle, filled with water, near the hookah. When a coal is no longer useable, I spray it with a water mist, to make sure it goes out thoroughly.

Does anyone else have any ideas, on how to use the hookah indoors, and prevent accidents, and smoke safely?

When I put water in my base I transport it from the kitchen in a pint mason jar. A pint is more water than my hookah requires, so I have about 2-3 shot glasses worth of water handy. When I'm done my session or if I drop the coal I use some of the leftover water to extinguish the coal(s).

it took me one time to make a habit of running water through my ash tray over the coals... no matter how much i think they're done.

the one time was me burning a hole through my trash can when i dumped the "ash" in...

I have a wide mouth water bottle in my room for me to dump my coals into. Plus I set it up on a wooden table type thing next to my bed so if the coals for some reason fell it wouldn't land on carpet and burn but sit on wood and maybe blacken it a little.

I had a small hookah that I used next to my bed, when I read at night. I tore up a cardboard box, and set the hookah on the cardboard, so I would not spill a coal on the night-stand.

If worst comes to worst. I will not drop the coals unless my hookah tips over. I'm certain and confident. In the case of a hookah tip over though, I will pop off my stem and douse the coals in the base water.

Try placing the hookah on a large baking or cookie sheet. It may not look the best, but it will keep your coffee table or floor from having burns on it. I know I've toated mine a few times. oops

MMMmmm My hookah rests on this awesome OLD school filing cabinet that no one in my family desires to use anymore. It has ash and burns on it after a couple of sessions but thats ok! I just give it a whipe with a dishrag and everything is A ok again.

When we got our first hookah, my nub of a friend grabbed the hose with much force and knocked it over. We thought the coal broke when it fell off the table and onto the ground, and that we picked it all up. Oh how wrong we were. The coal was circular and fell under the couch, where we let it smolder for a good 10-15 minutes. Left a hole in the carpet about 2-3 centimeters thick, and I am so glad it was not my apartment.

For safety, we just smoke outside now.

Pizza box. I got the idea one night eating pizza and smoking. I tore the top off of the pizzas box. Not only does it give you extra time before anything burns it saves wooden tables from being damaged from water, although I like that tile idea.

I ALWAYS smoke with a old towel under the hookah to protect the carpet. Now when I think about it...I should use two since some coals stray away to the unprotected parts of the carpet :P

Also, I but a sturdy book under the hookah since the carpet isn't exactly flat.

I've dropped a coal on my nuts before.

I had to throw away an entire pack of cashews because the coal exploded inside the container.

Maybe you should invest in a cookie tray. Or some nuclear bombs.

Yeah I should've thought about that ^_^. I was using a box at one time but that didn't turn out so great I mean, I put foil at the bottom to protect the box but haha...Eh it was a hassle. Burnt cardboard doesn't exactly smell pleasant.

Oh man, what a ghetto-ass setup.

I think the most aesthetically-pleasing solution would be to buy a cheap area rug. We had some at work but we threw them out. They were hideous artifacts from the Seventies.

I don't use 4 tiles, but rather one x large Italian floor title I picked up from Lowes. Ran $7.00 but it's 20" x 20" and large enough for any hookah.
