Lightbulb Tastes like coal, what the hell?

Hey guys,

Here's what happened last night I bought a Layalina's purple grape and Starbuzz's sour apple. Both of them tasted good, thick smoke, it was great for the first 10 minutes. I'm almost positive everything was set up right: let the 3 kings coal light and ash before placing it on the bowl, lightly drop the tobacco in, and had it about three mm below the top of the bowl. I think it may be the coals because i bought those yesterday as well. They are the 3 kings QL's i believe they're the 40mm ones.

I was in my room, there was no wind. I have a junior sized hookah, 21", 2 hose. I even had a bunch of ice in the water. Water level was about .75" above the down stem.

Problem: After about ten minutes everytime I would take a pull it would taste like coal and burn. Please help everybody!!

Most likely there was too much heat. How many of those 40mm coals did you put on? also blow on the coals before you put them on the bowl to make sure there lit all the way (no more black on it.) It should glue red all the way around. Also knock some of the ash off as well.

I only used one of the 40mm's at a time and I think your right it was just way to much heat. Do you think I should split the coal in half and only a half at a time?

If your using a stock standard bowl, yes. Or if you have a bigger bowl you can split the coal and put them on the edges on it so you'll get a more even heat instead of it all in one spot... and the middle.

It's defiantly getting too hot. Make sure like ghost said to place the coals on the edge to ensure an equal heating and rotate them every 10 mins roughly. Make sure your water level is about 1"-1.5" inches above the stem so you can maximize your smoke. Plus if it gets too hot again just blow into the hose so it clears out of the base and move the coal around and go from there. Practice makes perfect my man.

You might also try using two foils until you get the heat worked out.

By "two foils" do you mean two sheets of foil in between the tobacco and the coal?

Yes. Thats exactly what it means. You need more heat but it's easier to manage.

Yes. The second sheet helps reduce burn on the top of the tobacco. Doesn't eliminate it but helps.

Cool sounds good. How do you guys feel about 3 kings QL's compared to Golden Coals?

TBH you're better off with just about any natural coal over quicklites, I've tried several so far including Romann lemonwood coals, some arabic brand lemonwood and orangewood coals and alalali pressed natural coal (the best so far) and I have Exoticas, Beligian natural 40mm discs and some of those bamboo coals John from CH is sending me to try. I've tried Soex, Japs and Golden River QL's and they all were left in the dust compared to any of the naturals I've tried.

For the 40 mm ql I half mine. It keeps the bowl from getting too hot, especially on a smaller hookah.

Personally, I have never had much success with QL coals. One batch I bought was totally useless, they stank like gasoline, even after being thoroughly ashed. If you use QLs, you must let them burn OUTSIDE completely, until all of the igniter is totally burned up. Then blow on the coal, until you see some red.

No matter what type of coal you use, if the heat is too high, the smoke will taste awful. When in doubt, just remove or reduce the coals.

3 Kings is one of the better brands for QLs. I use 3Kings and BelgianQLs both give very good smokes in my opinion. Which is what this comes down to, just an opinion. I've never used the Goldens so can't say anything about them.

From what I've heard, the Goldens are much like the 3 Kings, though some say they have better behaved ash. Either way, I think they're likely both at the pinnacle of QL coals. None of the other brands I've tried I would consider smokable.

The biggest thing is simply to remember that a 40mm QL puts out quite a bit of heat. As suggested, try either half a coal at once, or two halves opposite each other on the bowl.
Also, make sure you're rotating the coals every ten minutes or so. I find ten minutes to be about the golden number when using 3Ks on my hookah, any longer than that and the coals start scorching whatever is beneath them.
