Default Red spots?

Hey there I'm kinda freaking out because I see reddish spots in the down stem of my KM Hafa. Its toward the top where the bowl would go (It's inside the tube). It isnt steel or iron because I held magnets to it and there was no attraction and then I dropped a magnet down the tube to see if there were any rustables but it just fell out the bottom slowly due to lenz's law, as opposed to sticking to the walls showing that there are no magnetic metals. I searched in google brass "red spots" and it came up with something call dezincification or something along those lines. Is it something to worry about? Anyone with a brass hookah or info and brass help me out!

P.S. I use sambooka's method to clean out my hookah and I run plenty of water down it to make sure that there are no bits of Lemon juice or baking soda in there after I'm done.

Im sure if you wash it too much with acidic liquids it will boost the dezincification process. You are breaking down the brass, and by using acids it's making that break down process even faster. I would use that cleaning process no more than once a month to get the smell/taste out if you smoke no more than 3 or 4 times a week.

try cleaning it w/a brush. Down stems, unless stainless, will rust if not taken care of.Be sure to keep 'em dry!It could also be residue from your tobacco.

fyi, a magnet will only tell you for certain steels, most stainless steels are not magnetic (iirc only higher carbon tool steels and iron are really magnetic due to the structures with the alloy, something like that, point is)

is it a very bright red or is it kind of a coppery red?

Its a coppery red. Also sambooka how often do you use that cleaning method of yours? Doesn't the amer have the same brass downstem as the hafa?

sounds like corrosion to me too, i just use water and brushes to clean my stem and then either blow it dry or use a rag on a hanger

there are ways to fix it but im not to sure the material or strength. some light abrasives may be able to get it off but tif you dont get it polished up well after that you may get more corrosion easily. a way to get rid of it (not sure if it would provide a perfect result or in the long run be a good choice so take it with a grain of salt, or in this case literally dont so you dont have more corrosion). but you could pour fine sand blasting sand down it until the corrosion has gotten sanded away, may take a while but you could just get a funnel (real funnel not the bowl) and just keep scooping it in to the funnel as it runs through.

o just remembered if you use flour after the sand it may polish it smother so you have less possibility to let it corrode

but you may have to be extra careful when you clean it to get it dry when your done

hmm well, there are so many things that could have caused it, some juices that didnt get cleaned out all the way, flaw in the metal, just missed that spot to let the corrosion to start, etc etc.

Brass is any alloy of copper and zinc, the proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses. So red copper smokes may be due to the high content of copper in the brass.

unless your hookah is 10 years old or more or you've been putting things down the stem that accelerate the formation of the patina, the green isnt from patina. left in the environment brass/copper will take almost 10 years to develop the nice green even patina you see on buildings.

discoloration on metal is early stage of corrosion, corrosion leads to more corrosion, which then ruins the piece of metal.
