when i go to my local hookah bar i always ask for the coconut coals. the are great, no taste, barely ash, and last hella long. When i smoke at someone elses place quick lights are just so much easier…hate the taste though

If you use japanese quick lights there isnt much flavor present from the coals themselves. However the pros for natural coals would have to be that they last longer, heat management seems to be easier to maintain especially the longer they burn, Instant heat for juicier shisha. I use both but i prefer to use naturals as i feel they do the job better and i dont go through as many. I also suggest getting a wind cover, not so much for wind but proper heat management and you will even cut down your coal usuage by almost half as it keeps your bowl at optimum temp.

Natural coals (good ones like Coconaras and Kanaras)

Pros: last at least an hour, 45 minutes at the very least, impart no taste, ash little, don't give you CO poisoning, rarely burn your shisha, Kanaras specifically are the cheapest coals on the market at $7 for 108 coals and are great coals
Cons: you need a heat source such as a stove, not always perfectly shaped
Considering the benefits, I don't consider the cons to be a great fall back on good natural coals.

QLs

Pros: start quickly and easily, all you need is a lighter to start them, easy to find locally, always come in uniform shapes
Cons: Ash A LOT, sometimes explode while lighting (NOT FUN!!!!!), stink like straight lighter fluid, gave me CO poisoning pretty easily and made me sick a lot, don't last very long, burn at very high temperatures that burn your shisha easier
In my personal opinion, good natural coals like Coconaras and Kanaras are EASILY better than any QLs that are on the market. If you absolutely have to use QLs, I suggest 3Kings, although personally, I suggest throwing any QL coals in the trash and buying Coconaras or Kanaras.

For me the only pro with QL's is that they can be lit anywhere with a lighter quite fast. The rest is all cons. Ash too much, don't last very long, put out inconsistent heat and importantly impart a huge amount of chemicals into your smoke.

I can get natural coconut coals for the same price if not cheaper than QL's but price isn't the reason I use them. Once you try naturals you won't go back to QL's. If you are looking for a cheap natural try Kanara coals, Hookahset have them at a low price.

There's not much more I can say than what's already been said.

However, I use both. If im at my home base or anywhere where I can feasibly get my hot pad set up ill use naturals.

If im out and about and unable to access a heat source (or if im too lazy/effed up) ill use ql just because they're so easy. They do taste like shit tho

the only con is you cant use a lighter you need a burner, the pros are easy heat management, no taste, no odor, last longer, less ash

I think almost everyone here has hit the pros and cons on the head for natural coals vs quick light coals.

One thing I wanted to say though is sort of an effect of the "no taste" of natural coals: It allows the flavor of the shisha to be more flavorful since it loses the "chemical-ash" taste associated with quick lights.

natural coals... i use the coconaras

Pros: last for easy 45 mins. longest was for like 1 hour and 15 mins.

no scent whats so ever from them

no taste into your coals when smoking. you don't have a room full of coal smell at all

when it ashes, it ashes real nice and simple compared to quick lights

Cons: takes a while to light. i've gotten a good flow going to get it all hot in about 5 mins

Quick lights

Pros: lights quick

Cons: leaves bad smell... the coal you can taste in the shisha..

once you go natural coals... you don't ever want to go back at all.!!
