Default Need help giving my hookah an INTENSIVE clean.

Okay, so I have smoked hookah on a few occasions and I wanted a hookah of my own. My friend decided to give me one of his old hookahs, and he must not have properly cleaned it in a while. I bought a new hose/top. But the stem itself is very rusted on the inside.

1. Is this okay? Is it still smokable?
2. How do I clean it, and get off as much rust as possible? Are there any good products for removing rust?

Also, where can I purchase a stem cleaner, my local tobacco store doesn't sell any. And my local grocery store doesn't sell any that are small enough...

Nah I wouldn't try to smoke out of a hookah that is HEAVILY rusted..it means that it is totally at the end of its life.

You can try cleaning products to get the rust out...but it aint gonna be easy

Jilly pretty much just summed it up. I would try some rust products before because maybe you can salvage it but either way I would personally just save up the 100 dollars to purchase a new one and get some coals and shisha while you're at it.

its not a good idea at all to smoke using a rusted hookah, you could have some serious crap happen. Do some very extensive cleaning, see if you cant get rid of the rust first. if not its dead. toss it

Head down to the local gun shop and get a gun cleaning kit. If they ask, tell 'em you have an old .22 rifle you're trying to clean up. Get one with a wire brush attachment.
Tht being said, everyone else here is right. The hookah is near the end of its life. If the cleaning rods don't clean out all the rust, they will come in handy when you buy your next hookah.

ungly took the words right outta my mouth.Depending how much rust is in the stem, a wire brush may clean it out. But trust your gut and don't use it if there is even the slightest doubt concerning your health.good luck!

The chances of cleaning it completely are almost zero.
I suggest buying a KM. It can take heavy pounding.

dood if their is not to much rust you can use like CLR, that is what i used on my hookah. Then just gave it a good rinse + wash. Still works great and i got 98% of the rust off and out. So that is what i would do.

CLR will remove some rust, but then start the quicken the new rusting process of the exposed metal.
Each time you use CLR the metal gets weaker.

well i soaked it for about 10 mins in CLR then hit it up with some OXY clean. Followed by a long 30 min bath with lemon juice and baking soda. Has not rust back over yet and i did that about 6 months ago. So idk it worked for me it is just a suggestion.

If I was in this situation, I would just give in and buy a new hookah. Rust is a pain in the ass and also is disgusting, from what I have experienced when I washed a non-washable hose (back in the noob days)...

I guess clr is your only chance. like zensilk said, it will make it rust faster after, but you'll be able to restore the hookah momentarily.

Yeah some pics would be nice ...

You may be able to use a metal cleaning pad to get a lot of rust off, if it is just surface rust!?

Dang, there's this stuff. I forgot the name of it. But you can find it at AutoZone, it's like a rust eating spray for engines and it helps loosen screws that are covered in rust and such. I wanna say it's like P-B something... My friends and I used it on a couple of the screws on his car, loosened them up quite nicely. And if you do try to use a rust-eating product, make sure you rinse it out hella well. Because they're probably toxic.

Just thought I'd mention that tetanus, despite popular belief, is not a rust-related phenomenon. Tetanus is an anaerobic bacterium and is more likely to be found deep in soil and other environments deprived of oxygen. Anything that has managed to rust would prove quite inhospitable to the pesky germ since the very event of rusting depends on the presence of air.

So rust is merely oxidized iron. I imagine smoking with a rusted hookah would be completely safe, but if it imparts any flavor on the smoke... well, that'd be nasty. As for cleaning it, I'd suggest any of the rust cleaning products already mentioned to loosen the buildup followed by a stiff brush doped with an abrasive such as Brasso to get rid of the stubborn bits. Really, the best method would be to sand it off, but the nature of being a tube makes this kind of difficult. Perhaps a wooden dowel wrapped in sand paper? Of course, remember to clean well before use to remove these harsh chemicals completely and any debris.

Carry on!

Yeah, James is right about tetanus... I bit my brother one time and he had to go get a tetanus shot. I'm pretty sure my teeth are not rusty.

Use a wire brush like one you would use to clean the barrel of a weapon, and this is where it gets redneckish. But I've done it in the weld shop and it works wonders. Make sire the brush is long enough to go all the way through and stick out the end of the stem, or half way atleast; with still 4'' sticking out the end. Take the 4'' sticking out (that doesn't have metal bristols) and clamp a cordless drill on the end of that, and spin that sucker inside and out of that stem, in a non-homoerotic way. Use lemon juice or baking soda in conjunction with this. Costs very little and its reusable, also doesn't thin metal.
