Default Authentic Middle eastern shish or american?

Hey guys I just wanted to see what you like better, more authentic tasting and looking shisha brands like (what i would consider them being) Nakhla, Laylana, Al-Fakher, or if you like stuff like Starbuzz or other similar brands.

I prefer the more authentic looking and tasting brands because smoking is more enjoyable when it is a more "deeper" taste

Starbuzz is good but sometimes the sweetness can be too much. they stimulate different taste buds in my mouth.

So which is it?

Depends on what you mean by American and authentic Middle Eastern. While everyone will agree that brands like Tonic, SB, Fantasia etc are American style What is authentic Middle Eastern is more complicated. Brands like Tangiers are kind of neither but good in it's own right. To a lot of people AF, Nakhla & Laylana are fake, trendy crap rather then real mu'essel. To a lot of people on the Arabic peninsula and India tombac and jurak are the only real smoke worth talking about and those guys would no more smoke Zaghloul then i'd smoke King Moassel. In a lot of places you'll find that smoking means you use old fashioned black mu'essel or tobamel.

Basically, I prefer complicated flavours and that means unwashed tobacco usually. But I can enjoy some of the fruiter, modern style products like Zona or Fantasia but typically i'd rather have Salloum or AF.

When I can get it i'll use traditional mu'essel like Afzal Pan, Salloum Plain or Hookah Hookah Cavendish. Still, the best to me is the rich, small batch black style stuff you can't even buy in the West.

No, you smoke it with foil. You never want to put the coal directly on the tobacco.

I like "modern" middle eastern tobaccos (ie AF, etc.) but man is it hard to beat Tangiers! The most "artificial" I get is AF and Fusion. Tangiers is more "to the roots". It's molasseses based which is rather rare nowadays that hails to a more traditional style. The only artificial thing about Tangiers is the flavoring put in there which is the closest to the real thing out there. Smoking Peach Iced Tea is like drinking some Peach Arizona Tea. Amazing. AF has the classic fruit flavors and I love Fusion for sweetness without it being saccharine and cheaper than SB.

Imo, I like both. I'm not too much of a fan of Nakhla but I do like AF. SB is probably my fav tobacco

You can never go wrong with AF, unless it's the citrus fruits....

The only stuff you put coals directly on top of is Tombac which is dried leafes sold in bricks that you have to soak before you use. Once you get it smoking you take the coals off. It's kind of tricky if you haven't done it before so i'll need to write up a how to.

Jurak is a finely ground tobacco paste made without glycerine and not much honey or molasses that has lots of herbal essences and spices.

Black style mu'essel's have larger cut have either no flavour casings added or they use herbal essences and spices but never fruits. Some have glycerine but they never have as much as modern mu'essel.

Both jurak and black mu'essel's are indirectly heated but the method is a bit different then what you're used to.

I'm sure there is a flavor in each brand that I like. I just can't smoke tangiers.

I've found flavors I really like in all brands, as far as I'm concerned it's all about taste not brands.

Looking through all of my shish I have way way more authentic than I do american shish. I guess that would mean I like authentic more.

I just had some Nakhla double apple last night, and I can honestly say the flavor was sooo great. Had nice apple undertones I enjoyed it alot. I am pretty sure authentic middle eastern shish will always ace flavors that the american brands can only wish to imitate.
