Default Comparing Exotica to Stargate Coals

Has anyone tried both brands of these shaped coals? I bought 1kg of Stargate and found them to be pretty bad; smelly when lighting, burned too hot, and left a bad taste when smoking. Truthfully, I'd (almost) rather use quick-lites.

I resigned my self to natural olive or lemonwood coals, sacrificing the uniformity of size and heating that I was hoping to get from the Stargates.

Anyway, a lot of folks rave about the Exotica coals. I'm wondering if there is anyone who has tried both, and found the Exotica coals appreciably better than the Stargate.

I bought 4 boxes of the Exoticas and am pretty dissapointed with them to be honest, they put off a real coal smell when lighting and splinter incredibly easy and only last 30-40 mins. From what I've read Exotic claim they've fixed the splintering issues but I don't know whether I'll be buying anymore.

Where do you reside and where do you store em? Get some silica gel packets and throw em in there to suck up the moisture. That is what causes the oder/splintering etc etc. If you take care of them they are an amazing coal.

coco nara FTW. try em out and you won't have to worry about breaking them apart or having them splinter. last a little over an hour too.

I live on the west coast of Tasmania so it's pretty damp outside but my place is Airconditioned 24 hours so inside humidity is low. They are also stored in a big tupperware container with a silica gel pack. They still splintered even the day they arrived I've tried Alalali and Starlight both never had this problem making me think it's the exoticas themselves that are the problem.

I've been tempted to try them but they are so damn expensive.

wolf, that's a far way for Coals to travel, i would recommend buying some Coconut Charcoal. It is denser and better put together. When you hold the Exoticas, you can just feel how iffy they are(light and easily broken). The Coconaras feel like you could build with them.

And you don't only have to buy CocoNaras, there are different brands like Cococha (sp?) and the ones from HookahCompany. Theres other companies as well.

I'll probably get some, I don't mind paying more for a superior product that does as advertised

because you live in europe, the vendor you got your exoticas from may not have taken part in the recall and therefor, you may be smoking from the initial bad batch. the problem has been fixed. I've been using them for months.I do however notice the smell when lighting but it doesn't carry into the smoke.

Australia is considered part of the asia pacific area not europe (99% of European vendors don't even ship to Aus. I ordered from 2 different vendors based in the US.

I've been hearing bad stuff about Stargates as well. to tell the truth, I don't think I'll ever use any other coal beside exoticas

That is, unless I get my hands on a better coal.. :P

The exotica's I got have the worst smell i've ever smelt. It smells like gasoline, and it takes more than just febreeze to get it to stop. It just lingers around for days.

I've been in contact with the manufacturer and they have an importer but he's currently only importing the BBQ coals, they suggested contacting him for samples though so I'll be giving that a try.

I don't think very many people tried Stargate coals. I know where I can order some. If I decide on ordering some I will let you know and I can compare them properly.
