after asking a few friends, all of us are concerned about them exploding. we're still going to try but we are going to put a heat shield on the bowl at all times.

A good idea but if they were going to explode at any point it will be while heating them up, during cooling the only thing that could happen would be cracking and falling apart.

if there happens to be any air bubble inside, it will explode , not just crack.

Good Evening All,
New member here...Great forum by the way...

How about trying one of these:

http://www.riverrockmassage.com/basalt_stone_kits.html

They are the stones used in massage therapy sessions and from what I read on the website above, they are natural volcanic rock. That makes me think they would have good heat retention

im gonna try some steel bar stock from our shop and throw it on a bunsen style burner and see how long it last like some 1x1x2 and see how long it would last if i can get it close to cherry hot. only fear is heat controll wondered how long it would be in the range of the natural coals. and if its gonna be too hot at the start of the sesion i think the marbles would do the dame to hot in the beginning and taper off.

I watched a Mythbusters today. They blew up stuff heated on an electric coil stove. The things that were glass, they tried to impale the ballistics gel dummy with.

Glass is scary, but i'm sure if these burst they would be materialized and it glass dust would get all in your eyes/nose/throat/mouth.

But i'll try em with a wind-cover on!

be careful that you check the alloy carefully

i dont think it will stay hot enough very long, also getting steel red hot will be like 1000+ *f so maybe the open flame is not the best option

hmmmm idea, maybe if you heat them up then use like 2 marbles with one coal it will keep them warm. not perfect but for those that cant keep them warm or cant get the right ones it might still save some coal

This is a great idea! I want to try this, I am going to wait for a few more guinea pigs first .. so I know what I am getting into before I try it.

Arg, that Crate and Barrel link on page 2 is dead.

How long were those marbles heated for before they got hot enough to smoke from?

What about getting copper wire and a 9v battery and lining the bowl with that to heat the shisha?

I tried them with marble thingy's just like the ones in the picture.
i got smoke, but barely enjoyable.
I used like 9 of those too. put them on the coil for at least a good 10 minutes...
1 pull and gone, no smoke after.
