Default Does size really matter?

I personally have a medium sized hookah and enjoy it very much.
Many hookah lounges and bars have larger sized hookahs, and around here it seems that a the larger your hookah the cooler you are.
I'm not sure if the size effects the quality, but I don't really have access to hookahs of all sizes to test for size relevance.

Does anyone know the truth behind this or have reasonable experience/logic to back any claims on the subject?

Is size important, or like most things is a larger one just another way of diverting attention from areas which may be lacking?

the truth is larger hookahs look more attractive to me, however, many mediums work just fine. There are even the small ones that get great smoke, but you'll find most habitual hookah smokers have to have several. I personally don't have a small hookah like a mya qt, bambino, razo, chic, etc but I have been tempted to get one. Whatever you smoke from, just get your method down and it will work just fine for you.

I think a medium hookah is about right. I mean I have a few different sized ones, and while my tallest one seems to smoke the best, I think its because it is higher quality than my other ones.

I don't believe that it actually does matter performance wise. I have a 32" myself and it is mainly just a cosmetic thing. The only thing that would hinder performance as if it was shorter than a 12 incher. It make not cool the smoke down enough before it gets to you.

This is my general feeling holding build quality constant.

Where smoke quality is a combination of all the variables that go into a good smoke (harshness, smoke density, etc.)

I have a medium sized hookah that smokes just as well as my large. I've smoke the dinky hookahs but they just seem a little too harsh for my liking.

Agreed. I also love large hookah's not because they necessarily smoke much better but because to me they look more beautiful and have a "presence" about them.

I think most people who take Hookah smoking seriously own at least one "large" rig because usually it makes for a smoother smoke but at the end of the day it's up to personal choice I suppose.

I own several hookahs ranging from 7-8" to a stunning 40". I have to say that the graph mdl posted is on the right track but its not that stepp in the begining. I can sure tell the difference of a 30" from an 8 inch but i can hardly tell if am smoking from my 30 or 40 inch. My idea of the smoke quality graph is what i attached below.

Cheers

size dosent matter. big hookahs just look good and nothing more. you can get the same results with a small or medium hookah.

I disagree with you here hookah_man. there are some facts that are unavoidable. FACT 1 :
The base holds a smaller amount of water so (1) the smoke doesnt come in contact with so much surface area of water and (2) smaller amount of water means it gets warm faster from smoke passing through it.

FACT 2:
A 30" stem can cool the smoke much more than a 10" stem.

Fact 3: A big hookah can give you more smoke with not much effort because the base is bigger, (the vaccum effect can be much bigger than a small one). They might both give the same amount of smoke but the bigger of the two will have a better effortless draw.

Fact 4 : Usually bigger hookahs have wider diameter tubing (meaning stem hose ports, heart ports) which also result in better draw and more smoke.

And probably there are much more.

Cheers

I wouldn't go any bigger then the one 1stGenrex has

My Choice would be between the sizes of 27'' to 32''

And for the large looking hookahs in hookah cafe are just for showing off something to spin you out when walking inside, if you owned a cafe i don't thing you would have pumpkin hookahs on ever table lol

Indeed, 28-32" is the sweet spot. At 32" the bases used are the biggest on the market, so its the maximum amount of smoke you can have. The difference of a longer stem is minor and outscored by the ease of maintenance and portability of the 30" hookah compared to a 36" +.
28" to 32" is what i recommend to anyone looking for a rig closer to prefection. This is why KMs and MZ are the best alround hookahs. They stand between 28-35" inch with large bases and wide stems.
If you dont really care spending time for maintenance and cleaning a large mya is as good.
HOokahs dont need to be from a brand to be top notch. Any well constracted hookah between 28-32" will smoke the same even if its dirt cheap or $200

Cheers

I ordered a 26" Syrian from john at CH. Hopefully she will smoke like a champ. I also have a 18" off brand, but I love it. It smokes well.

another thing to consider is stability...with the base being the same size at the bottom(lets pretend they are) the taller hookah is more prone to tipping over given a smaller nudge. just something else to think about

Yes, size does matter. It is my experience that narghiles under 26" U.S. are harsher, hotter and have greater CO then full sized rigs. I will also say that rigs 0ver 38" U.S. have a harder draw although then do have a much cooler smoke. In the end I won't smoke from a rig under 26" U.S. unless it's of exceptional quality. Of course if you don't get your heat management right or pack wrong your session will be crap no matter what what you smoke.

Yep, there's no possible way a Leila will ever be as enjoyable as a 29" Syrian. It's proven in video reviews, of course, and it's just common knowledge.

Smaller hookahs smoke hotter.

I have a 26" myself and it smokes like a champ. My cousin has a little mya qt that is 14" and it smokes great from the times i've used it. So it seems to me that its all about heat management as far as harshness goes. As long as the hookah is of some quality it shouldn't matter.

i have a 19" hookah that hits just as well as anything else i have. never noticed any difference.

however any smaller than that, you just have logistical problems. handheld hookahs cant be packed using phunnels, cant use the heat i use on every other bowl, etc etc.

Shishaholic I disagree with your "facts"

The smoke passes through the stem so fast that its length does NOT matter in its "cooling ability."

The size of the base does matter though.

yeah but then think about this, the downstem ideally is still the same distance under water than a smaller hookah

Sorry if this is a repost -

The idea behind the length of the stem involves the space between the coal and the water. The longer down stem creates more of an area to help cool the smoke as you're smoking. I have a 15" and a 34"; w/o ice in the vase which do you think with that idea inmind gets the cooler smoke? And with ice it is still noticable.

I have a medium sized and a large size hookah. My med. pipe is a 3 hoser and I like to block off 1 of the hose stems and smoke from the other two at the same time lol big hits there boy! But my large pipe definitely hits big off the single hose.

it's all personal preference, obviously. I couldn't point a finger at my favorite pipe.
