Default Cleaning the Hookah

After reading many posts on the cleaning of our beloved friends, I am a bit confused as to the correct method. Lemon juice, vinegar, rice, baking soda, alcohol, acetone, hot water, cold water, etc... Whatever happened to good old hot water and soap? Are there some exotic compounds generated during the smoking phase that defy normal cleaning methods?

For my own preferences, I fill the sink with hot water and Dawn detergent. Using a scrubby and a pipe brush, everything comes out clean and not smelling like anything. Am I doing this right?

I don't think the brushes I see would even fully clean a Khalil Mahmoon vase.

Time for some Do-it-yourself sessions with Juno.

I also use hot water and normal dish washing detergent and it works just as well. Cleans nicely and gets rid of any odors. I just ensure that I rinse my rig thoroughly after scrubbing to remove all the soap.

People have different cleaning methods, I just know mine works best for me and takes very little time to clean. It is all preference ... personally I would never use soap in my stem, but that is just me.

I hate using soap in the vase because it takes FOR EVER to stop bubbling. I just use normal warm water after every session and when I need to thoroughly clean out my hookahs, I use lemon and baking soda

I guess using the beer exposes the metal to the air after the coat of grime is removed and that allows for oxidation?

I use Seventh Generation all natural dish soap and hot water on both my stem and vase. works great. I've also used dilluted lemon juice.

I use lemon juice and baking soda. The acidity in the beer can increase the rate of corrosion, but baking soda balances out the pH.

hahaha by that rationale, if you sneeze, and a booger lands on your hookah, dont wipe it off, as it will expose the metal to air, and it will oxidize

I've also noticed if you clean your shisha regularly( I give my syrian a thorough cleaning once a week) you don't really need to go crazy w/the solvents.

This is what I use 95% of the time ... I only use the beer on occasion if I am drinking a few beers with hookah.

I would like to know what Fursaken thinks of cleaning with beer on occasion?

Give us the 411 Fursaken!

Lemon juice, hot water and for tough stains... baking soda. It idea of putting soap on my hookahs is like putting soap on my carbon steel wok - it will make it clean, but ruins the seasoning. LOL!

But seriously, I rather stay away from soap, just my personal pet peeve. (PS: it's name is steve :})

I'm not a fan of using soap, only because it's a pain to get it completely rinsed off. I just use a mix of realemon lemon juice from a big bottle and water. This way if I don't get it all rinsed out, all I taste is a little bit of lemon. Plus, if I'm feeling frisky I'll leave a bit of lemon juice in the vase water for some extra tang.

I've never tried beer, and probably won't. Aside form fursaken's advice, it seems to me like a waste of a perfectly good beer.
