Default Is the Al Fakher Ketchup still going around?

I picked up a large sampling of Al Fakher, along with their regular grape.

As I was preparing the hookahs for the party on Saturday night, I noticed the grape had a strong ketchup smell. I thought nothing of it and packed it anyways for myself.

Boy, was I wrong...

I checked the production date and it said March 2008. The next pack I opened just now smells just like a fresh serving of McDonald's ketchup.

Anyone else get some Al Fakher ketchup from this year?

Well my AF grape also had a bit of a ketchup smell but it smoked just fine. I suppose it doesn't really matter what is smells like in the packaging as long as it's tastes and smells "grapey" while smoking then it's all good I suppose.

How did your sample smoke?

It smoked just like it smelled.

Ugh.

I am going to see if leaving this next satchet out might change the smell into something more pleasant.

I hope the tub I have at home smells like ketchup, because I have yet to experience that. Juno why don't you bring it to John and see what he thinks of it??

I've never been a grape fan but this problem keeps coming back. Oh well, there is always AF's premium grape as an alternative, i think it's $1 more. It is black grape rather than white grape. Anyone have "ketchup" issues with this?
i actually prepaed golden grape (that I have had open for 3 months now) for a friend yesterday who is a grape fan and he loved it. He got huge smoke from it. I tried it, it was ok, but I'm just not a grape fan.

Hey John, Why don't you have Juno bring the AF Grape to your shop, so you can smell it??

I don't understand how somthing like this can get by. I mean if your working in the fakher factory and you know what grape smells like how can they let this ketchup crap happen?

maybe the ketchup thing was a reaction that happened later in the packaging? I mean it could be a lot of things.

True, but hasn't this been a problem for a while now? ( few yrs or months). There has to be some on in the factory that went home to smoke and think to him/her self that hmm this smells like ketchup.

Yes I did. And posted about it some time ago. My batch was Jan08. I thought by buying the Golden line I would avoid it but nope. Went south in a couple weeks to smellling like ketchup.

it is possible that they changed the "recipe" and that one of the flavoring components used is changing over time (from either shock or decay) and is turning into nastiness?

That's a decent idea Scoop. Even the stuff at the new lounge I found last week had an off smell to it (passed over). Heck, I opened up my "questionable" batch yesterday... to my horror, it smells worse than before. Something they have done to the grape recipe has got to be the problem.

Leave it out for a week. 1 mix a day.
It will smoke a little tiny bit more like grape.
Also, leaving it you closet out open would be better, less airflow.

It's funny that John and I were smoking a perfectly fine bowl of this stuff a while back. It tasted like grape jelly, actually.

Gah.

I actually compared the Al Fakher Ketchup with real ketchup. The shisha actually smells like a concentrate of ketchup, with vinegar to boot.

well juno, heres what happened to me. i went to a local hookah lounge (dream cafe), and as i was leaving i saw they had AF (this was a months and months ago!), and i asked if they have AF grape, the guy said no but he then ran to the back and came back to me with some shisha in a jar, saying its the last bit of AF grape from the employees stash that they smoke during their breaks or something.

i took it home, and turns out, the stuff smells like ketchup and it even tasted like ketchup! fast forward a few weeks and suddenly its pure grape goodness! weird but perhaps the hookah godz pulled a miracle.
