Default One Last Hurrah...

Well, i bought one more box of Exoticas. People have been saying good things, so I had to look into it myself.

I received the "new batch", with the UPC code printed on the side.

The first thing I noticed is how light they are. Compared to the CocoNara's, it's like a Hummer to a Tank.

Second thing I noticed is that they are weaker. The first thing i used to try to cut them was the serrated edge on my pocket knife. It has always worked with past Exoticas; but it failed with these new ones. I could not get a piece that had not cracked or chipped. Second for of cutting was a Razor-Tooth Saw. They are garden tools, serrated, and cut through branches with ease. Well, they were even worse, breaking the coals into tiny chips and pieces. Third thing i could think of using for a clean cut, Hack-Saw. I put in a new blade and went at it. Clean cuts were what i received, thankfully.

Third and Fourth things i noticed were the powder that was created while cutting and a crystal-like substance. It was a crap-load. When i proceeded to blow this powder off of my side-stairs (where i was cutting them), there was shimmering pieces in the plume of powder. That kind of scares me.

The clean cut made me feel good about how they would perform.

I was wrong.

After sitting on the burner and becoming completely lit, they looked like the charred ground of a barren desert, only instead of small cracks in the mud, there were fault lines. The cracks went through the coal all the way down to the other side, where, of course, the coal split into pieces. If that wasn't enough, the coals couldn't give enough heat off to smoke an Egyptian bowl of Layalina Coconut. They would glow red when i blew on them, then they would die down to a black/grey color (not the ash) and just look like they were dead coals. They were never in fact burning red unless I aided them.

I have never had a coal fail so miserably for such a simple task as lighting.

****There was no smell or taste though. Congratulations Exotica.

Idk but my new exoticas are very dense and heavy compared to the old ones. They also seem a lot more stronger imo

i have heard of peolpe cutting them before they are lit but what i do is light the complete bar until it's ready, then place it in the hookah tray, take the tongs, closed, and tap firmly into thirds. One tap should do it for each cut so firmly but not enough to break it in a million pieces, it works every time. i should use the new video feature for this. i have a cam but need to learn how to upload though, maybe someone else can do this for us that uses this technique.
i have only used/stocked the new batch so I can't compare to the old ones. i still like them.

Well I have no idea whether my box of Exotica's are supposed to be old or new (ordered mine from Hookah-Shisha around 2 weeks ago) but they seem to be working just fine. No problems to report. I actually love these coals so much that I don't think I'll be using a QL anytime soon again.

You use a whole exotica stick for a bowl?! At most I used to use 2 1/3rds.. max.

Or do you just break it into thirds and then let a third of it sit there?

i put all 3 tostart and depending on how it's going i will usually take 1 third off and use it as the other 2 start to die down.

I've gone through box after box of exotica with each one having problems, rarely did I get a piece that didn't crack up and they had a crap lifespan. Coconaras on the other hand have been perfect, each and every one performs extremely well, lasts 2-3 times as long as the exoticas and no splitting or breaking up. The lack of waste and amount of time they last more than make up for the additional cost imho, definately the only coal I'll be buying from now on.

Not really when they're almost twice the price of exoticas but last up to 3 times as long, makes them cheaper in my book.

If you can get two cartons of Exoticas for the same price, then why even bother with Coconara?

I'm not saying Exoticas are superior, because I personally despise them, but they seem to work for most folks.

Ok, I'll put it another way, 1 box of coconara last me as long as 2 1/2 - 3 boxes of Exoticas + they are a much better coal with alot less ash.

Coco's are not too expensive.
They do last sometimes up to 3 times as long. too
my exotica's have trouble maintaining heat after about 30 minutes.
the coco's- takes 1 1/2 hour for the heat to start dying.

I guess I'm just going to have to look harder for these boxes of crackly-crumbly Exoticas I keep hearing about.
Of all the boxes I've been through, I have yet to have any of these problems.

Yea I've had a hard time breaking up these bastards into usable pieces. Other than that they are fine. The only problem I have with Cocos is that my preferred vendor doesn't carry them (not your fault man, keep the exoticas I'll keep buying them).

So I just gave my Exoticas another go-about.

Bah. Those bastards kept breaking up even on short falls. Dropped one on the tray, not even an inch from the tongs to the tray, and they shattered into a million little pieces, just like that last hope I had for them.

Oh well.

yea mine crack sometimes but its normally a medium size chunk from one side...so its still good to use....i dont like coconaras because i like to blow on my coals when i see there not glowing as much since the last ash..i like to blow on them to try and get a little more time with it before i have to ash again.....and with coconaras.....burning little pieces of the coal go FLYING on the carpet and everywhere i mean there ok i would deff use them if i had no exoticas....but imo there not better than exoticas even with them cracking a little

I just got some Exoticas and they're fantastic. I use one of those pumpkin cutters from halloween to break down a bar into 1/3's. I was using the Diamontes for a long time, but these are fantastic.
