Default Tangiers, OMG!

So I get a box dropped on my desk today and it smells fantastic! I picked up four flavors of Tangiers from Zensilk and I can't believe I haven't tried this stuff yet. My desk now smells like nectarines(and not the candy stuff), sweet cherries, lemon-mint and a big amount of floral. They all smell very good but the Kashmir is beyond words. Thanks, Zen.

Tangiers will work anywhere.
All you've gotta do is let it sit out for anywhere from 4 to 24 hours (depending on the difference between you and California's humidity and which flavour you've got). Once it has acclimated to your local humidity, it will be fine.

so I live an hour and 20 minutes away from where it is made, does that mean I just unpack it and smoke it? NO I think you would still have to acclimate it...

Let me ask you a question about the Horchata. I got some, and It smoked great. But the cinnamon tickled my throat and made me cough. It wasn't harsh, but it just had this weird tickle feeling in my throat. anyone with that same thing?

yeah, I get that tickle a lot with tangiers ... only one that didn't was the orange soda after about 20 minutes, the first 20 gave me a tickle but I just kept smoking cuz I didn't feel like setting up a new bowl.

I've only tried the Horchata and didn't experience that but then again I've only had 1 250g bag so far.

Ima have fun acclimating this stuff if I ever get around to trying it. I am going to be in a dry dry dry HOT HOT HOT climate for a year, then I am moving to the humid Austin, where I think it should have nearly zero troubles there. TX humidity and Cali humidity have to be somewhat close. I have never been to Cali, so I wouldn't know how it is there.

tangiers has a mind of it's own. I've had some flavors that smoked fine right out of the bag, and others that needed several hours of acclimation to perform.
As for the Horchata, the only time I've noticed a tickle from the cinamom, was after the bowl had been going for an hour or so and the flavor took on a mre pronounced cinamom taste.

Horchata has always smoked so smooth for me. It's my favorite from Tangiers.

You don't have to acclimate tobacco, it usually smokes fine right out of the box/tub .. I have never acclimated anything.

For some reason they have come up with this tradition of acclimating Tangiers, it is supposed to make it smell and taste right.

from tangiers site on acclimating tangiers:

Quote:
How long should I open the product up to the air before using it?
Ideally, you should allow at least four hours. You can do it with less, but the tobacco can suffer “humidity shock” which isn’t dangerous, but can affect the quality of the smoking experience.

What is “humidity shock” and what causes it?
Some manufacturers “wash” their tobacco to remove nicotine from it. Tangiers doesn’t “wash” its tobacco. Products that contain nicotine are sensitive to the effects of the humidity in the air. The tobacco will absorb moisture from the air slowly until it becomes “comfortable” (equilibrium is the chemistry word). If the humidity in the air is different than what the tobacco become comfortable with, then the tobacco will try to get comfortable again. If the weather changes or you open a package of tobacco up for the first time, this change may occur. During this period of change, if you try to smoke it during this period, you may find that it:
A) “burns the throat” or makes it feel tickly. This happens when the tobacco is comfortable with drier air than the air is when it is smoked.
B) Flavor dies out very quickly or seems weak or varies greatly during smoking. This happens when the tobacco is comfortable with more humid air than when it is smoked.
Remember, allow newly opened tobacco 4 hours or so to get comfortable with the surrounding air.
When you isolate your tobacco from the surrounding air, it protects it from strange or foreign odors, but it also prevents the tobacco from getting comfortable with the humidity in the air.
If your tobacco always seems to be off one way or the other, just leave it slightly open. So air can get at it.

I understand the logic being a cigar guy but isn't that a bit counterintuitive? I mean the tobacco is literally soaking in liquid that is for a large part water... So if anything were releasing or taking up humidity it would be the juice (glycerin, honey et cetera).

I've never noticed a difference acclimating Tangiers or not. You just have to mix it up very well before packing the bowl, then pack the bowl more carefully than you would normally, use special technique, and manage your heat carefully.
