Default My shisha experiment

Well i've been pondering the question of home made shisha. I look at smileys shisha and how that WAS a success and figured I can do the same thing and do it for less.. you know the walmart way lol Jk.

Anywho this is what ive done so far

I bought some cheap cheap strawberry shisha from the local supermarket a while back. So I grabed a strainer and this big plastic container. I put steaming hot hot hot water into the plastic container and i threw in the bright red nasty tasting tobacco and kneeded the tobacco in the steaming water and strained it and repeated for about 45 mins. Then I strained as much water i could out of the tobacco. Now as of this minute my hands are dyed red from the coloring in the tobacco ( i shoulda wore gloves idiot me ) and i have the tobacco air drying in the strainer and hopefully some of that fruity smell will come out of it

My next attempt will be smoking this washed out tobacco to just see how it tastes.
Keep tuned.

Disaster strikes

so the tobacco dried to a slightly moist consistency
I tried to make 2 batches of cherry. I used cherry iceys you know the flavor ice. I melted that mixed it with some shisha then added molasseses. Both batches just reaked of molasseses I didn't even want to even try smoking it. So i think i might buy some vegetable glycerin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

the glycerin is a must.... at least if you want it to perform like most of our commercial shisha.

The trick is to find the right amount of glycerin and molasses or honey. I have read that around 15% of the shisha by volume is glycerin. The glycerin itself will provide the thick white smoke.... but too much and you get all smoke and no flavor.

You dont want to have a whole lot of h20 moisture in your tobacco.... and before you need to find a way to get the glycerin to infuse itself in the tobacco well. you might consider cooking your mixture on a low heat.... or doing what I did once that seemed to work quite well... take your shisha mixture and put it in a mason jar (with lid) and run the closed jar in the dishwasher when wash a load... just make sure the lid is on good and tight before hand... dont want soapy dishwater in there... you just want the heat in a closed environment.

IF you were cooking up 5-10 kilo's then a pressure cooker on low might work real nice too..... but havent tried that since I wasnt making anywhere near that.

Sometimes time is your friend... just letting your mixture sit in its own juices for a month, smokes much better than a bowl fresh out of the cooking ***.

Two things:
1) Good luck with your endeavor. I really wanna try Hajo's method, but I have to find time and money first as well haha.
2) They sell shisha in your supermarket Is it a chain, or independent or something?

Well I got my hands on some vegetable glycerin and some time this week I'm going to buy some official Indian tombac and also some one on the forum was willing to donate some extra tobacco leaves. So I figured I'd clue you guys in for whats been happening.

Here's a flavor idea - my lovely n00b BF wants to make - B33r or Ale flavored shisha. No joking... or even Crona, Hinny or Guiness...

*shutter* That just sounds completely disgusting, but who knows... may work out (or may just be the worst thing on Earth)

I think getting the basic flavours work would be good before trying the more radical, or stupid, flavours.

If Hajo can get a cherry or apple to smoke well then that would be an enormous step forward. Something that i would consider cooking at home

I've gotten lots of fruit flavours to work well although some of more exotic stuff (kiwi, pomagrante and such) I haven't tried yet. I can make shisha as good as the stuff I buy but it is different and it takes a lot of time so I still mostly smoke what I buy.

the only thing im worried about is what happens to a food thats heated up and smoked .. lets say we wanted beer flavored tobacco..would it be safe to smoke it because if im correct chemicals change once they turn into smoke.

anything alcohol based has a very complicated flavour profile do to the use of grains, cereals, acids from mashing, hops and very complicated chemistry. If it is possible to add such a flavour into shisha it would take someone with far more knowledge of food and tobacco chemistry then anyone I know. Stick with something simple.

unstable bonds will break and reform into new compositions given enough energy. :P chemistry raar

if you can find a syrup or flavoring it might work, otherwise I wouldn't.
