You say the smoke is really harsh with two quarters of an exotica. Does the smoke taste a little burnt? You might still be putting a bit too much heat on. I use two quarters on my small phunnel and it works nicely, but you never know. Maybe try dropping to one third and build a windcover out of foil and see if that helps.

taste is never burnt, just very hot/dry/harsh. I am using very very little coals now and its not any better, smoke is small to medium, taste is small to medium.

have had the horchata acclimating for a few hours and am gonna see if that smokes any better

Most common problems why Tangiers doesn't smoke right:

Too little tobacco in the bowl. Be greedy with the amount you pack into the bowl. Less shisha makes the smoke thin and harsh.
Too few holes in the foil (not an issue with a screen). Also makes the smoke thin and harsh.
Tangiers required less heat than most shishas. Too much coal will cause the shisha to burn and smoke harshly. Try taking some coal of, or breaking the coal apart and spreading out the pieces.
If you're getting good smoke, but it feels harsh, take some charcoal off. If you aren't getting much smoke, there is probably too little tobacco or too few a holes in the foil.
Frequently, the tobacco will smoke a little harsh for the first five minutes or so, but once the bowl gets up to temperature the whole thing will smooth out into smoking mode.

sigh, these threads are getting to be toooo much in abundance! Please, start referring people to the thread http://www.hookahpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4073

And just for the record, you are not alone, I have never had a positive experience with Tangiers either, no matter how many attempts I make. I have a couple flavors I have tried to acclimate and they still smell like BBQ.

I'll stick with the good old reliable Al Fakher, Nakhla, Starbuzz, etc. no acclimating needed, no special bowl required, no hassles or chants involved! That is just my personal opinion .. and choice in my hookah tobacco

+1, couldn't agree more!

No offense to the Tangiers fan boys .. kudos for taking the time and effort to get it to smoke

Time and effort? It takes the same amount of time to pack tangiers as it does a regular bowl. Minus the acclimation (which I dont seem to be doing as long anymore) The flavor and length of the session more than makes up for letting the baccy sit out for 4 hours. My opinion of course. Tangiers all the way.

You have your opinion, I have mine .. what I keep reading over and over in threads is that people have to "Practice, Practice, Practice" and if you ruin a bowl, just dump it and "PACK MORE" seems like a waste or tobacco, time and effort. That is what I mean by time and effort ..

For any other tobaccos (Al Fakher, Nakhla, Starbuzz, etc), I just fluff it into a bowl, with about 1/3rd the amount of tobacco, put on some foil, poke some holes, put on some coal, and smoke .. cost less money, less frustration and you don't have to jump through hoops to get it to smoke without harshness, BBQ Flavor, etc. But hey, that is just my opinion ...

Cheers!

I've never had a bad bowl of Tangiers and never actually needed to acclimitate it even though I do (no bbq smell at all). How about making some very imformative posts sticky so newbies don't need to keep asking the same questions (I know there's a search feature but face it most poeple don't use it)?

it really is all about forgetting your previous knowledge of packing a bowl. sprinkling and fluffing cause problems, and thats what people experience when they try it. even when they see pictures ,its not the same as witnessing it first hand. it really needs to be packed, not sprinkled.

well sambooka, to the whole pack more and dump it. you dont have to dump it out. if i smoke for an hour and have 3/4 of a bowl left i just save it. as long as its not charred theres nothing wrong with it

Positive in the sense of "it didn't taste like bbq" but it was definitely not very flavorful to me. The flavor was weak. It was blueberry flavor. And I only detected a very light hint of berry and the rest was just smoke.

The Orange Soda tasted ok .. but wasn't the best I have had .. it had that slight taste of orange, and smoke.

I am sorry, but this is just my opinion ..
