Post Some basic questions about hookah...

So I was using the hookah tonight and was wondering if some of the harsh smoke I was getting about 20 minutes in, was due to how small my stem is(it measures 13.5 inches from top to bottom, not including with the base and bowl. It is an egyptian style also.). At first I thought is was to much heat but even with one coal I was still getting the harsh burnt taste. I tryed using two layers of the heavy duty tin foil and adding ice to the base, but after about 45 minutes I stopped and looked at the shisha and the top was gettin burnt and there was still a little on the bottom that was still good. I am thinking as I am writing this that maybe it was getting toward the end anyway and was going to be finished but I have never burned hookah-hookah shisha before and thought that maybe it was due to the size of coal I used and how small my stem was, must be time to upgrade. Also I was wondering if anyone new if shisha is better then cigarattes and cigars? I know smoking isn't the most healthy hobby but I am under the impression that shisha doesn't have all the harsh chemicals in it, would this be a good assumption? Thanks for the info.

Hey dude. Stem length doesn't matter really. What we need to know is what kind of bowl your are using as well as the type of charcoal.

As for hookah being better or worse than cigarettes, well, the cig smokers will say cigs are better and the hookah smokers will say hookah is better.

From my understanding Shisha is healthier in the fact that it doesnt have nearly as many chemicals than cigs, but Shisha is molasses or tar based or somthing and from what i heard its about 100 cigs to 1 shish session tarwise. Sure the hookah filters out tar, but cigs last like 5 minutes and some shisha sessions last up to an hour and a half to two hours.

i dont think there can be tar... cuz i read some were that tobacco has to be lit to like 400 something degrees or something like that before it produces tar which is why cigs produce it cuz its pure lit on fire if you will, also isnt shisha "baked" at about 150 to 200 degrees so theres no way it could produce tar, both cigs and hookah are not good for you but imo hookah is alot safer compared to cigs but is still some what bad for you...

as for your harshness problem it may be the way your packing your bowl, how do you pack it? also do you put your coal right on top of the bowl ? you should keep your coal/s on the edge of the bowl and rotate them every 15 mins or so...

also when u take ur coals off, drop them onto your ashtray to get rid of the ash and leave them there and clean off your foil of any ash by blowing, cleaning, etc then put your coals back on

Shisha doesnt even contain any tar, read at the back of an AF pack and it says
'nicotine=0.05% and tar=0%'

Thats the thing, if i can find the article again, it contains 0 tar yes, but once it get lits it produces a TINY amount so, it still technically has tar.

But try cutting down on coals, packing your bowl a little less.

What the hell are you talking about? Did you really think people soaked tobacco in tar and smoked it?

In regards to the actual question:

No, the length of your stem doesn't mean much in this case. It seems like you may be over packing or using too much heat. Some shisha can't recover from being burnt at all and need to be replaced or have the burnt picked out and then flipped to keep smoking smooth.

As it has been asked, what kind of bowl and coal?

It isn't good for you; and the "better for you" argument that is ongoing between hookah and cigs is a stupid one, both acts are still smoking. We'll just have to see who lives longest. I smoke both though, so I'm screwed.

HH burns really quick. Try some AL fakher. That will give you good clouds, good taste, and it will last longer.

Thanks for all the help, this site does have a lot of good info. I was using a large ceramic bowl and the big akhla quick light charcoal. I will try the suggestions and not pack it so tight, I will follow up after. Thanks again,

that crap you clean out of your hookah? That's tar!It is impossible to burn mollasses/honey/glycerin w/out producing a resin, which is tar.

hookah and cigs are both not good but hookah is alot better for you less chemicals.. and also really no tar.. bc your cooking the shisha you not burning it. also make sure ur coals are well ashed and distributed around ur bowl not in the middle.. other then that i dont see why you should get harsh smoke..
