Default A Blast from the Past

A very weird thing happened recently. I was out of country on business as is often the case and after an unsuccessful meeting with some clients I went out to go check and see if the local cigar shops had anything on special offer worth getting. While looking around I saw a shabby homeless guy with one leg missing that I thought I recognized but I assumed I was wrong.

As I was walking away someone called out my name and I realized that the homeless guy was an old mate from my police days ( long before most of you were born I'd guess) and stopped to chat. The cool thing is that he's one that got me into cigars as his family owned a shop in Salisbury. Needless to say, the years since "liberation" haven't been to kind to him and while things could have been worse they were pretty close to the bottom.

Anyway, I ask him to take a room in my house as I have space and needed some place to stay and it's pretty amazing to find a long lost pal. In any case, he had never seen a narghile before so I showed him how to use it and it was a big success. A great couple of nights were spent going down memory lane and smoking al-Mutawakkil so I guess you could say that life can't get much better.

I am glad to hear this story. It's touching to say the least. Your willingness to help (your story implies that you offered without him even asking) shows what people can be capable of on a fairly minor level and that it can make difference. I can't imagine the emotions that you instilled in that mans heart.

Well I don't really think about how what I do effects others I simply try to do what seems like the right thing at the time. I would assume that most people would do as I did given the situation. It's hard to describe but although we haven't seen each other for a lot of years I still feel a very close bond. We went through a whole heap of extremely stressful times together and since we shared stuff that just doesn't happen in peace time nothing can really change between us if that makes any sense. We both are disfigured and have the same feelings of loss and remorse which is something that I can't really describe.

Although lots of crazy, unlikely things have happened to me over the years running into an old comrade the way I did is pretty strange I admit.

I used to go to the Springbok Club functions but I never ran into anyone I knew from the old days at those get togethers. Besides, reflecting on just how bad things have gotten with other dispossessed peoples is not to uplifting to say the least so I quit bothering with that sort of thing.

Still, good fortune is something to be celebrated and doing it with someone that I can share tobacco let alone history with is great.

It is acts of kindness and friendship like yours that make the world a tolerable place to live. I hope you have a great time with your friend while he gets himself back up.

That is exactly my point. You did this because it was what came naturally and what you believed was normal and correct for a person to do. I feel the same and believe that more people should come to realize that random acts of kindness can add just a little more good energy to the world.

That's really cool of you Hajo. If more people lived their lives by the treat others as you would like to be treated mentality the world would be a much better place. Good on you Hajo!

I am thankful for the all kind comments and glad that when something so nice yet curious happens I can tell people about it. What is so funny is that after all the years have passed and all my efforts to track down old mates have flopped something like this happens out of the blue. It will be cool if I can get him post here as he knows more about tobacco (although not narghile stuff) then anyone I know.
