Oh, so I should wait for the coal to be completely covered in ash to get the best effect. Or does it matter?

Yeah, one should NEVER smoke a black coal - completely ashed grey only!

There are tons of tips and ideas here - search around, read, basically the whole board is tips and helpful advice.

And one tip - the glass part the water goes in is called a Base or Vase, not a Bowl. The bowl sits on top of the stem where the tobacco goes.

Good luck and welcome.

Hey could anyone tell me the proper way to set up the "bowl" this time. I know that you shouldn't have the shisha touching the foil. But how do you set up the holes on the foil with the coal. I usually just make little holes on the foil where i would put the coal. So the coal is covering the holes. But is there an actually proper way to do it. I see several people making holes all over the foil, careless if the the coal overs those holes or not.

packing a bowl is rather easy, just there is so much "fluff it, but pack it, but not to much, but blah blah blah"

i just started setting up hookahs when im over at my friends cause hes lazy and we always mix stuff up. if found that either putting the shisha is about how it comes out of the package or a little looser works fine, at least as a starting point. if you mix it up (or just pull it all apart like you were mixing it up) you pack it in a little bit.

now tangiers is different, i dont think ive gotten the chance to pack it my self yet but even the guys at the hookah bar are telling me its not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. ill see how that is in a few weeks when i get my set up

tangiers is easy just accumulate it for about 24 hours and slightly pack it and it works best if you use a phunnel bowl and use less heat it is a little touchy but easy all in all i got it rite the first time

one time i had a friend pack the bowl while i set up my hookah, assuming he had packed a bowl before. i was wrong, and he had packed it super tight. so when we put the coal on and i was trying to pull nothing was happening and i thought something was wrong with my hookah until i decided to check his sheesha job. and sure enough it was packed so tight i couldnt pull anything through whatsoever.

-moral of the story, pack loose and "fluffy" bowls like others said.
