Do you believe this? Have you read the study? Will you come with me to cause a ruckus at Blizzcon?

OKay this "study" has to be totally bogus cuz c'mon! If EACH GRAM of HOOKAH tobacco had 802 MG (almost 1 gram) of Tar in it, my teeth would be black and my I'd have mouth cancer right now

Pssh I really think scientists were drunk whenever they make "studies" of the hookah. Whateva! :P

Default Yawn

Who Cares?
Lets face a little reality. Sucking smoke into your lungs is not a natural occurance. Guess what, it ain't good for you. The choice is yours to make as a sentinent being. Bravo, and welcome to the realm of free choice.

Comparing and contrasting the "relative" health benefits between hookah, cigars, cigarettes, and analyzing the generated numbers doesn't mean squat. It's kind of like listening to a group of hookers discussing their relative sin value based on their charge rate. The higher the number the worse the sin?

Anyone can post "numbers" on the web. Do they really mean anything?

I enjoy hookah and cigars. Yes it is bad for me, but the pleasure is worth it.

I agree Gryphon. Any form of smoking is bad for you and everyone who smokes something or other has made a conscious choice to do so.

This however does not negate the fact that most of these so-called tests/reports/studies are grossly inaccurate and are not based on "real world" situations or conditions...but most of us know that already.

I quit smoking cigs over 5 years ago due to the severe health ramifications and because I have mild asthma. When I used to smoke cigs I would need to use my pump at least once or twice a week but since I started smoking hookah in October last year I've only used my pump once. So the results speak for themselves.

Exactly. That little "study" you posted is the most bogus thing i've ever looked at!

It's been mentioned before around here, tar is only mostly produced when you burn tobacco. And that is exactly what you do with a cigarette, and as for shisha you 'cook' it. Given there's still tar produced when you smoke shisha, it's not nearly as much as cigarettes. Just as long as you don't pack your bowl like a n00b and have direct contact with the foil and shisha then have your shisha stick to the foil when you're done, you shouldn't really be concerned.

And nicotine, it depends what you're smoking. Nakhla and Tangiers have a substantial amount of nicotine in it, and smoking an hour long session of either of those certainly produces more nicotine than a single cigarette. But washed shisha's like AF, definitely not that much nic at all.

Absolutely agree! Shisha is merely beeing "cooked" and if it was actually burning like a cig, its gonna be hella harsh.

Can you hear the dead horse being beat? LOL Ridiculous numbers by an obviously skewed study.

Sambooka posted the following link ages ago:
http://webfea-lb.fea.aub.edu.lb/aero...ilehpaper1.pdf
It is a proper scientific study, perhaps a little underfunded, but it explains all the things they did in detail and it all makes sense.

I always wondered why cigarette companies did not just get in on the action so to speak. Instead of trying to screw up competing products make your own.

And as a side not if each gram of shisha was around 80% tar it would be fairly obvious from the seared flesh in your throat and lungs. Now if it's 80% tar and we can assume that around 20% is flavoring, molasses/honey and glycerin.... Where the hell would the tobacco go?

Anything can be bad when not in moderation, remember hookah is something you want and choose to use, not a chore you have to do. Just enjoy the experience and don't try to smoke your whole stash at once. Enjoy the smoke.

Negation of the facts. Inaccuracy? "Real World"? Pardon me while I try to determine what the facts are. OK, did that and guess what? Depending upon what forum you follow, your subscription on the web, your political reference, the time of the day, phase of moon, and how your shoes fit, you can easily support or detract the hobby of the hookah. "Studies have been conducted", shall we engage in the field of Solipsism?

I offer one question, do you want to smoke or not?

So why all the hulla-ba-loo?

I appeal to the moderators to move move these "health posts" from the mainstream to the General Yadda-yadda column.

Surely you cannot ignore the anecdotal evidence provided by many members.

I thought we posted these to laugh at them.
Didn't know anyone took them seriously.
FACT: Smoking is bad.
FACT: I still smoke hookah and love it
FACT: All studies are debatable and a few are truly laughable. So lets laugh at them while the coals heat up.

Before one can say anything meaningful about the relative dangers of narghile use to cigarette use empirically sound research needs be conducted in both areas. Unfortunately, such is not the case for either and that reality will not change as a result of the political realities that determine research funding and public health campaigns. Those that want solid info on such matters should check out the websites i've posted about the subjects.
