Default Natural Finger Coals

OK, So I got some of the Diamante Finger Coals ... and I am LOVING these coals! They work great, and pretty much produce no taste on the session.

I would like to settle my mind on a question about these coals though. Do certain brands of shisha require less of these coals? Sometimes they can start to scorch my shisha.

For instance, I used about a 2" inch piece for some AW Bounty the other night, and it kinda had the burnt taste throughout the session. I did break the coal up, dropping it in the tray, breaking it into smaller pieces. But still had a burnt taste.

Thanks!

Yes, they burn hotter and most shisha will require less of them than say, QL's or JST's. I start w/ (1) 1.5-2" piece and go from there. Use your windcover - it's easier to controll and boost the heat than trying to heat more coals.

Plus, remember - rotate them coals! I found out I'm moving them around every 5-10 min, not ashing, just moving them.

The Dy brand (same ones I have that you got SamB) burn hot, nearly as hot as the Smiley Cocoshell coals (i've learned the hard way as they both like bouncing OFF MY ARMS).

Try smaller pieces, (2) 1" pieces and the cover. Rotate and manage the heat w/ teh cover like a hawk. They take some time getting used to, but I do love them.

Also - are you underpacking or overpacking? These coals DO NOT LIKE underpacking. I've gotten better sessions w/ an overpack of shisha in the bowl than not! I'm not sure why, as one would think the extra "space" would help difuse the heat - for me, it doesn't, it just causes the shisha to burn faster!

Yeah, I think it is going to be trial and error on different brands of shisha ... so far though, I have been doing well with these coals. They have been working well with the Hookah-Hookah I have been sampling.

I sprinkle the shisha in the bowl, and leave about a 1/8inch gap between the foil and the shisha. I kinda use a toothpick to flatten the shisha around the sides, not press, but rake to make it more even.

I got a bag of Forani coals from a friend and they are pretty damn good. Not much ash, zero taste, long lasting and pretty good heat. The only downside is that they are tube shaped so they can role before they start to ash.

As best as I can tell, all brands of shisha, and flavours within any given brand, require different amounts of heat and coal management so the only way to see what works with your set up is trial and error.
