Default Do any of you do this?

Ok so freezing the base of the hookah is a given, adding ice and water etc.
But i just started freezing the stem of the hookah as well, just curious if any of you also do this.

dont freeze your base. It will crack sooner or later. That is how I broke my first hookah. I freeze my stem but not my base

I freeze both my stem and my vase if I want really cold smoke, which I do occasionally. To everyone freaking out about the vase cracking, it will only do that if you initiate thermal shock, which is why I fill my vase with water THEN freeze it. There is no sudden shot of lukewarm water to shock the glass and I have never had any problems with either the vase or the stem.

so in short imo freezing is fine as long as you have water in your base before you freeze it, and the stem will be fine.

Water in your base before you freeze it? how long do you leave it in there exactly?

i do it just until theres a slight crust of ice on the top of the water. sometimes not even that long- ill put my vase with water in it and put 'er in the freezer as i pack the shisha, prepare the coals to red goodness, and get a drink for the duration- by then the waters cold enough to do the job

keep in mind, that colder smoke, while smoother, can actually take the edge off the flavor.I used to put ice in the base but now I use only tap water.

Exactly, very smart responses indeed. I tried that "put the base in the freezer" deal and quickly stopped when I found out about the harmfulness of it. I don't freeze my stem either, but as Abu said above, the cold might make the smoke smoother, but it will definitely affect the flavour by decreasing it quite a bit. So I simply stick to cool tap water

Ditto. I find it tastes better with room temp tap.

This topic was discussed once. Some people from this forum tried hot water, but everyone said that it was sh*t So if u want to, u can try, but it's not recommended

i dont do it i just keep a perfect amount of water for my hookah chilled in the fridge.

freezing the base is fine as long as you dont pour warm/hot water in it, if the base breaks when you put water in it after its been frozen more than likely it was made wrong (not cooled slowly enough in the cooling oven). properly worked glass is strong as a mother, thermal shock on it usually has to be in the 100's of degrees not just 50-75* (F not C)

I was about to say the same thing, I'd be afraid of cracking the base. I'd also be afraid of damaging the stem, I'm sure it's not very good for it to be in a freezer for very long. Especially the KM Amoura you sent me, John, that thing has a tiny tiny cut in the stem and it'd suck to get rust all over the inside! But I bet I'd know immediately if it were rusting. Thankfully it's not in a bad place.

In my amateur opinion heating/cooling cycles will probably weaken the stem although I am uncertain about the vase. I think if the concern is the desire for a cooler smoke, why not just alter the contents of the vase to something other than water? Or a sturdier cold resistant vase alternative? Of course this is discussed on another thread so I best just refer to that rather than dragging it out here.

it wont weaken it at all. your not heating or cooling to any extremes. in fact after steel is heated and quenched for high strength items many times it is put into basically liquid nitrogen for a while which strengthens it due to the extra carbides leaving (iirc, i just woke up but i think that was right). metal will not weaken from cycles of 25*f-75*f, heck you dont have to worry about metal weakening at all really until over 400*f depending on the metal (but a few metals like sterling will harden in the 4-500 range), to get most metals to weaken substantially you have to get them up in the 1100+ range depending on the metal so that it is annealed. for a hookah you would melt out the solder way way way before you hurt the metal at all

and for the glass, as long as its made right you will have zero issues with it
