Default Splitting Coals

How do you guys split your coals? Both times I have done it hasn't ended smoothly. Last night a coal landed on my foot. Tonight one part landed on the carpet, on a DVD and on my wooden table.
How do you guys split coals without sending them flying?

Golden Coals.

I'll be getting some CH coals soon so I won't have to worry about cutting them. But I still have some Golden coals around

I'll try that next time.
I'm so bummed. Ruined table. Huge burn mark in the carpet of my apartment and a ruined DVD. On top of that, shitty hookah session.
Oh well.

I have no problem cutting through CH or Exotica coals. I actually just did it today with some CH QL's.

Just take a serrated knife that you don't mind ruining and saw a notch through one side, then the opposite in the same place. Then just use the palm of your hand to apply pressure from the top. They snap pretty easily. You may want to use a cutting board though.

Yeah I'm planning on taking nail trimmers to it and cut out the burnt part. Fortunately this carpet is thick and varies in length.

I use mainly QL's so on my standard egyptian i use 1 and a half coals. Or Use two to heat and one and a half to smoke.

And I mainly use the disc type QL's just to get rid of the hassle of breaking coals. When you split them and you ash em be real careful though. They sorta crumble, and once landed on my shoes. I got a few black burn spots on my shoes now lol.

I give them a few hits with my hammer in my coal holder in the kitchen so if anything falls it falls on the ceramic tiled floor (no loss)...... But I break then AFTER I light them. Lighting them makes them more fragile and easier to break... plus it is less messy because when I break them before I light them they break into black powder that sticks to anything it touches.

Why do you need to break em? Just use the whole thing.

I stopped trying to split coals and just started buying ************* coals, they're precut so you don't have to worry about slicing and dicing your coals, this makes heat management easier for me too.

i am of the practice of not splitting coals except finger coals, i just use more and hang then off some or use less and a wind cover

if u want to split them either score with a steak knife and break of you shove the poker on your tongs in the center and it should break in 2-4 pieces
