Default Props to John at ******* Hookah

I dont know if most people have noticed this but after watching one of johns vids on youtube of his coals I noticed his hole pattern you know the three "sqaures" and I wanted to try it and sure enough I was getting good clouds on the second pull and the smoke didnt get harsh the whole session on my small tangiers phunnel and I didnt have to keep moving the coals around so its a great hole pattern espeacially for phunnel bowls so I just want to say thanks to john at ******* hookah for introducing this hole pattern...

I should update that hole pattern that i use. I have actually strayed away from that as it's really great for start up but not too long lasting. I always try different ones now, but mainly I like to use an Egyptian clay bowl, poke a hole with a toothpick thru the center hole and the other 4-5 holes outside the center of the bowl. It's important for airflow. Then just a circle if tiny holes on the outer edge, where you will be placing your coals. It has been working best for me, and it you are having trouble getting to the outer holes with a toothpick, you can always try from the opposite end with a skewer or something else long enough. Thanks for the props! The best hole pattern is the one that works best for you and it's good to mix it up a bit.

yea well what I did was I did his method with the three squares of holes but I also had a ring of holes along the outside rim of the bowl to allow for extra air flow and it works great for me on my small phunnel bowl with three 33mm 3kings qls. it starts the smoke up quick on like the 2/or 3 pull and it doesnt really get harsh only after about 30 mins but I go to ash the coals and put them back on and blow out the old smoke and its back to normal and stays good the entire sesh.

Why in heaven's name is anyone using 3K's anymore? CH quicklights are the best imho. Taste the tobacco not the fuel!

I've been using the 3 squares method consistently since I got my large phunnel and CH quick lights. I've been getting amazing results. The key is moving the coals once the smoke has gotten really good.

Start off with the coals centered on / completely covering each of the square hole patterns. Then after about 5 minutes move the coals so that they only half or less of the square holes. If it ends up getting harsh, move the coals completely off of the holes, so that they are resting only on the un-poked foil. Then if you need more heat, move them back over the hoes.

That's what I do, and it works amazingly well.
