Default Size of the hookah

I've been reading how several people like several different size hookahs and such, but I have to ask the question: Does size matter?

I assume it does because one of my first hookahs was a 'store bought' one and I want to say it was a 36" one. Now as a first hookah, it was great. Then about six months into it I decided to make my own. Mine uses a small base, the shaft is probably 12" at most. I also have a diffuser at the bottom and I've NEVER EVER EVER smoked a better hookah. It produces way more smoke and 4-5 times ticker smoke than any hookah I've ever smoked on.

So what are your thoughts? Any info regarding this?

umm yeah size does matter for different reasons.. the bigger the less chance of getting harsh, and a cooler smoke. I like the larger hookah, about 24-32 in i feel they smoke great..

Larger ones use bigger bases, bigger bases = more room for smoke .

i think the size of the volume above the water line in the vase is the biggest thing to size that improves it, smoking on my friends 18 in vs my 32 no difference in how frequently it gets harsh, thats just heat management. a taller one can keep it cooler between more distance to go and that the bowl heats up the stem a little below it usually with a taller one there is more room to play with.

personally the smallest hookah i would buy is 18 in but i feel height is a minimal factor over all (12 vs 40 inch you will notice big differences but 12-18 or 32-36 very minimal)

The question here really is 2 fold. What function does the stem perform? And does the size of the smoke reservoir really make a difference if you are just sucking more smoke into it as you go anyway?

The little difference in smoothness most attribute to heat dissipation in the stem. I wonder if there isn't more of some dilution though I can't figure out where the clean air would come from so maybe it is as simple as the heat thing. As to the base the temperature of the water and the surface area are the biggest things to cooling the smoke at that point. The smoke bubbles through basically the same amount of water whatever size the base has but the greater surface area would give it more cooling power and the greater width of the bowl will give the extra stability needed to keep the balance of a taller pipe.

However, all that is moot if you think about how much cooler and smoother the smoke is than even a churchwarden pipe. I have a churchwarden meerschaum pipe and as pipes go there isn't much cooler smoother smoke than that but it doesn't even begin to compare to a Hookah for smooth. It is like every other quality issue with hookahs or anything else will you notice a difference between the bigger/better quality than you do with the smaller/lesser quality well probably but does that make the smaller or lesser one bad or not worth trying? I don't think so. Some might. Usually I think better is the one for me but there are limitations to that. Money is one and hype is the other. Sometimes better isn't so much better as more popular or more consistent. Sometimes you get more reward by going out of the norm and taking a risk.

We smoke on a sub-prime hookah every time so far small tight standard hose that came with the cheap hookahs at the bar we go to to smoke but it was good enough to hook us. The stem isn't wide the hose is tight and the base isn't as big as some of the larger bases but mmmmm it gives good smoke.

To sum up. Bigger is better but that doesn't make small bad. Just because something is better doesn't make it a necessary for a good smoking session. Now the cool thing is that Hookahs in general are a fairly cheap hobby and upgrades are cheaper in this than in most hobbies I have ever had. So if you don't like something on a pipe you get you can always replace it later.
