Red face Tips for opening a shop

My husband and I are becoming interested in owning our own business. We think hookahs are the way to go. Some sort of a smoke shop. We would love your help and support. Please if you have any tips or advice on things we may need to get started let us know. Feel free to send us private messages as well. Thanx a whole lot guys. Keep on smoking!

In any case, be sure to look up about permits and licenses, that sort of thing...

If it is a hookah lounge here is some pointers I've learned:

Get your business plan together to the last dime. Then double it.

Find a spot where the average age is in their 20's. Around universites is the best bet to get the max business.

Know what your talking about when it comes to hookahs. I've talked to the guy that owns the hookah bar by me and he doesn't know too much about hookahs. He knows a lot about what he serves in the bar (Nahkla tobacco) but pretty much nothing else (I said something about Starbuzz tobacco and he looked at me like he never heard of it before) and it seems like he just did it to open it and wasn't really a conisure of the hookah and it kind of puts me off that I can't go in and talk to him about all the different things about hookahs. This really isn't a huge issue just my 2 cents that I think is a really nice plus when someone comes in and you know what they are talking about.

And one last thing. Plan, plan then plan some more. Make sure everything is in order before you start anything. Don't leave anything out thinking that it is little and wont matter. It just might turn into something bigger then you expected and then you run into a problem.

John at ******* just closed his shop because it wasn't paying. I'd say if anything go for online sales but the market is already over saturated.

To the OP:

Depending on your location, I'm not sure how well a Hookah only shop would fare. Online operation might be the best route. Most shops around here sell cigars, wine, and hookahs along with a ton of various accessories.

I used to run/own a pretty successful lounge and i am glad i'm out out of the business. I've written about it here so if you are interested use the search function.

As to a store front i'd forget it due to the regulatory environment. As to mail order if you have a good deal of experience running a retail business go for it provided you can either:

1) have enough purchasing power to undercut the prices from other mail order establishments
2) get stuff that that no one else can.

Simply selling the same products at roughly the same prices as a dozen other mail order places won't cut it.

The idea of opening a hookah lounge would be so much more appealing if they didn't have so many new laws and regulations around them =/

If I could go to a place that sold food, alcohol, and tobacco products, and provided a place to smoke I'd be a bit more likely to go. But now in order to smoke inside something like 80% of your business has to come from tobacco.

Even without the very odious regulations the insurance costs and potential liability costs of running a tobacco related business have gotten down right oppressive. The situation is the worst with cafes however and with the U.S. economy on the verge of collapse it seems like a terrible market to get into.
