Default Layalina Pomegranate

Before I go off half cocked about this I wanted to ask about it. We went to a place over the weekend to try a different place to smoke. I was a little worried cause they only have multi-hose hookahs and the set up on this thing was crazy. They gave us two hoses cause we brought one of my wife's friends with us and we felt like it would be a good idea to get the second hose so she wouldn't have to put her mouth on the hose after us and vise versa. Ok so they bring this thing out with a wind screen on it. I took it off cause we were just getting started and the coal hadn't even fully lit yet. Under the wind screen was a clip on windscreen. Ok so we opened that to blow on it a little to get it lit. We finally did. We never put the big screen on but we went from putting the little one all the way on to cracked a little to wide open and some variation of that. Anyway the whole time it was just not very fruity at all some times I was tasting more of the tobacco than the flavor other times it was just a week smoke. The question is was this more a problem with the setup, our messing with the setup, or the particular Layalina we got? Also is $5 for a 50g as outrageous as it sounds to me for this stuff?

ok I was about ready to write it off but I was thinking it is one of the brands that everyone here seems to go gaga over so there must have been something wrong.

layalina isn't the best brand by any means...but I get decent flavor and good smoke out of it whenever i smoke it.....

So they had a large windscreen and then a hinged windcover on too? they mustve been really trying to save a few cents on coals....or prevent noobies from tampering....not sure what their motivation with that is.

they gave no tongs or anything. They had the big windscreen over the hinged clamp on windscreen and they used a metal screen for the coals which was a 40mm quicklight of some sort. The hinge screen turned out to be basically necessary because they didn't know what to do with the coal screen. The hinged windscreen basically was holding the coal screen down otherwise it wasn't sealed to the bowl at all. They didn't fold any of the metal tabs down. It was a multi-hose rotator as well. No flavor and either a ton of tobacco flavored or harsh smoke or some with faint fruit flavor but almost no smoke.

Worst hookah experience of my life.

Yeah i have a windcover that is hinged onto the bowl...and it comes with a coal screen that has no flaps...so you have to use the windcover to keep that coal screen on if you choose to use it....and its awkward to take the coal screen off and use foil....,.because it gets caught in the hinges and stuff....

overall the hinged windcover are terrible anyway

layalina Polmagranite is a less than stellar product. I've yet to find a polmagranite that truely hits the mark. The reason you may not have been given tongs may be because the lounge doesn't want folk screwing w/their coals.
I'm not a big fan of windscreens unless I'm actually outside in the wind. And even then, I feel they hinder the smoke w/regards to heat and air intake.

I agree that the hinged windcovers are a pain. They force you to use the coal screen and don't give you much room inside the windcover.

The large windscreens that just sit on top are great. I have found that they give me more smoke and the coals last longer. And theiy are easier to remove when you want to adjust your coal.

layalina is the shisha that i got started with. It had decent flavor but seems liek smoke wasn't big.

I am going to go with the setup as the problem fez.

I suppose that is the most likely culprit. The set up was complete crap. If I get a chance to try it at home I will then. Give it another chance. It just seemed really week you know when it wasn't harsh.

Fez I don't know if you've read any of my posts recently, but needless to say i am a HUGE fan of Layalina pom. I've got it smoking perfectly in an egyptian clay bowl with foil and CH coals, and my oh my its probably my favorite shisha. Then again, Pomegranites are my favorite fruit. It was the perfect blend of sweetness mixed with sour, damn I want some right now.

5 bucks is pretty lame for a 50g of the stuff though. It's supposed to be around 3 bucks for a 50g of it, so you are getting hosed 2 bucks. As for whether its the tobacco, if you have a not dryed out (can't imagine layalina dried out) good batch than it can't possibly be the tobacco. I'm actually trying to hunt down a kilo of the stuff myself.

Layalina makes great berry and SOME fruit flavored shisha. I'll avoid the mangosteen like the plague, but their Blackberry/Raspberry/Blueberry/Pomegranite/Passion fruit smokes are rather enjoyable IMO. A pomegranite that hits the mark 100% has not been made yet, but of all the poms i've tried this one is the closest to hitting the nail on the head (I actually like it a little more for the sourness =) )

Yeah that was one of the reasons I was so excited to try it. I was wicked disappointed though. I think maybe you are right it may have been that it was dried out or may just be the set up like everyone else said or both. Either way I will have to find some and try it myself. That place was terrible. I will never go back there for Hookah again. Though they did have decent beer and a good selection of pipe and cigars.

It's such a great smoke if you like the sour aspect of the pomegranite over the sweet aspect. It's got the sour bitter tartness that I love, with just a slight pinch of sweetness. AFs grenadine was just overwhelmingly sweet with no sour whatsoever, and i'm just a sour fiend.
