Default Help setting up an old fashioned hookah

Ok well i'm not exactly sure if it's old fasioned or not. But i have this hookah with no grommets. Instead it has strings, fabric material that you use to seal the hookah. I recieved it as a gift about 5 years ago from my grandparents ,and well never really used it cuz i was never able to set it up properly and instead it has been more of a decoration item.

Yesterday i decided to give it another try at setting it up. Before each set-up i would test for leaks. (Putting my finger over the top of the stem and sucking through hose). After a few different methods i found out that wetting the strings and leaving some of it hang to the side (string was too long/thick to properly fit with all of it wrapped around) was the best way of getting a good enough seal to make it smokeable. Theres still a leak cuz i can suck through the hose even with my finger over the stem. It pulls nice with little to no effort at all with some decent smoke (knowing theres a leak). I know this hookas has potential!! i can only imagine how it will be without any leaks.

So i guess my question is what is the "proper" way of setting up those kinds of hookahs to make it leak-proof. With no luck of findind anything on the internet about it's set-up i figured to ask you guys for some much needed help

I've also took some pics if that will help...

Thanks for any help/suggestions

looks like a mya, i might be wrong

but maybe you just need to find grommets that fit and ditch the fabric crap - at my local shop, ur allowed to bring in ur stem to find matchin grommets before purchasing

yeah you should be able to find some grommets, might be slightly difficult because you have a syrian style bowl...believe its a male fitting bowl....whereas most are female fitting...(might have switched that around)

yeah the top of the pipe where the bowl goes is female...that sucks if you wanna buy a new bowl, i don't know of any male bowls but i'm sure you could find one

as for all those strings...you can probably just wrap wet paper towels around the same parts and it'll work too

Ya i forgot to mention, I tried using a grommet from another hookah i have, which luckily was the right size. But inside the base, it goes inwards like a funnel...which makes the grommet push up and invert outwards. Hard to explain...but im sure it can't be good for the grommet. Either way that was the worst set-up not even close to leak-free hookah.

That is a Syrian and the grommets have been replaced by what you see there now. You can find that bowl at HookahCompany and SouthSmoke. My good Syrian uses the male style bowls an that's where I buy from. They also carry the gaskets you need for your Syrian, by the way that pipe looks sweet.

Ok so my best bet would be to pick up a set of mya grommets? Was kinda hoping to keep it with strings , it's a bit more work but i def like the style.

The grommet is from a vendor we can not mention. But buy these bowls, do not put any MYA bowl on your Syrian!

Hookahwaffle also had a good link. But $10?

Also Syrians do not work with the thick black KM style grommet unless you seriously grind it down thin.

That is a Syrian pipe for sure. The male bowls were used by the syrian narguileh before it adopted the more famous female bowl type.
Its quite a good looking hookah.

my brother got a hookah in tunisa about 15 years ago, he never smoked it when he got back with it (at least i never saw him use it and it sat in his room all the time). but anyway it didnt have any grommets just came with a strip that looked like a tunicate they use in the hospital to give ivs (but it was a lime green color, and not latex)

but his rig is now way to old to use since it was never smoked and cleaned, it has some corrosion inside but its a nice display piece
