Question Opening a hookah Lounge/Restaurant

Hey fellas, i've been thinking of opening a hookah lounge/Restaurant.
How much would it cost? estimate? I was thinking maybe i could get a vendor and advertise that vendor in return for Discounted hookahs and supplies. Also my father could be the cook since he owned a few restaurants before.
Im thinking maybe a 2 story buildling, 1st story = restaraunt, 2nd story = Lounge with a Bar but with shisha, charcoal, etc.

I am really excited about this and this will take TIME so yeh. but overall it will be worth it.

your local laws will determine it, license fees, etc, plus you better have good music and appetizers.

I plan on opening a restaurant one day, but i want financial stability before i go and do something that risky lol

Wow if I thought something that elaborate would make any money I know the perfect place in downtown Nashville. It used to be an Irish Pub (one of the better ones with real Irish food), on 4th and Broadway and it was a two story monster of a place that hasn't had any tenants since Seanachie's went out of business there. Restaurant down stairs means families could come and dine and it would be smoke free as all non-21 and up places are in Tennessee now. Upstairs would be 21 and up so as to allow smoking and would be a Hookah Lounge. I like the idea but I am just not sure it would fly here. Great part though is it is Nashville so you can definitely get plenty of live music.

First we had the official 'Name This Hookah' thread, now I think we need an official 'Opening a Hookah Bar' thread.

LOL. I suppose but I imagine it would be used about equally as much. Whoever starts it will be the only one posting a hookah bar opening just like the identify only had the original pipe to identify.

honestly you need to set it up to make your money as a restaurant, the great local hookah place back home is always packed but even with the lounge going every night they cover all their expenses and pay their employees and a little extra but not much.

well here's how i think of guesstimating start up costs solely for the hookah portion:
say 40 hookahs, at $80/each = 3,200
and then maybe 200 boxes of 250g of AF flavors, at $10/each = 2,000
and then furiniture could be however expensive or not expensive you want it to be lol. so i'd say 5,500 for hookah + tobacco?

sadly most hookah places do not have quality hookahs, but wholesale cheap ones, that could be his intial option + premium hookah for a higher cost to the customer, and remember, most places cost around like 10bucks for an initial setup, he'll make the hookah back, but its the location costs that will get him.

even the crapy place here has myas, and i think they are glass myas (or they at least look like myas, but i havent been since i have known the differance). but you could probably get a bunch of acrylic myas for 50 bucks a pop and they will smoke fine but be a little less likely to break.

honestly if you can pull in customers getting $10 rigs vs $50 rigs isnt a huge deal, thats a half a week of sales instead of one night

the other thing, i know the whole alcohol thing has come up but if you make it 21+ only allowed where the hookahs can be smoked because alcohol is served there you are going to lose a huge customer base. honestly you would probably have more customers and better sales with out alcohol in the hookah area allowing 18+ in instead of 21+ with alcohol. and also if it is a restaurant style place it might just be easier to card and/or do wrist bands/X'ed hands

This really depends on where you live, but shouldn't the lounge be outside? or at least in a balcony.

you mean due to laws? ya some places have weird rules and laws but most places allow hookah bars or have ways to easily and legally go around the laws

Well, yeah that's a factor but I mean more tradition wise. Hookah's are usually smoked outside, unless the weather doesn't allow it.

ya check the actual statues that say what would define ok for smoking in/outdoors. i know in az it's ok to smoke indoors but with specific exceptions.

and in re: to photolinger -
ya most places use cheap hookahs... but the one that i personally frequent uses ONLY KM hookahs and natural coals... and they prepare them quite well. so granted MOST places don't do it, but i HAVE seen it done, and if it were me, the only ones i'd use would be KM's and/or quality syrian hookahs.

an ideal setup is where the 2nd story during nice weather can be full opened up and in bad weather can be closed down, or at least where the balcony area is like that, a little more of an investment but during the bad weather you keep all your seating

With the anti tobacco agenda here in the states, I would be weary of such a business.

honestly it is so diverse from state to state, saying that is illogical. yes trying to do it up in the north east is probably a bad idea but there are plenty of places where it would be fine. VA is not going to try to tell places that nowhere can have smoking inside, it just wouldnt fly here
