you could do both i guess but to blow it would be better of course because if you torch it you wont be able to get all the way around the glass

you will want to get it lampworked (torch). one of my media areas is glass and i do hot fabrication (blowing) now and theres no way to easily get a mouth piece like you will want it if you do it hot, lampworking it will be more precise and give you want you want, at least i think

Be sure to post progress. I'm sure there are plenty of is that'd be interested in custom pieces. I'm currently trying to configure some old Lamps into hoses.

I actuall just signed up for a lampworking class at my local glass studio. there going to do more than the standard beading there going to also do blown hollow beasds so maby i can help you out in time i want to buy the equipment for my self but since a good torch is over 450 dollars its gonna be a minute before i could make one without studio time. i plan on posting pics of my work starting next thursday after class suposidly we start making stuff the first night. I cant wait it sure looks fun and the finished products just look awsome.

at least the tools you need to lamp work you can do for relatively cheap (torch and annealer), hot fab'ing its like 100k for a studio, and still 2-5k for basic tools if you rent space

but as to the tips, they probably should be double or triple blown (thickness of the glass) and it should be quick and easy to do, just figure out the shape and start with a sealed tube that will fit the side you need on the hose and form it from there, then just blow the hole out at the end, should only take a few mins to do

olympic color rod and whale apparatus i think should have it, lamp working supplies seem easier to come by on line than hot fab stuff

Matt, Say I get some color rods and grab my Torch, can i wrap the melted glass around a metal rod to create a tubelike structure and will it come off the tube wit ease , is a release agent needed, sorry for all the questions but a guy i had been working with has moved out of state and will not return my calls. Im trying to make something simallr to the end of a KM hose, just a 6-7inch glass tube to attachto a clear tube from home depot, Thank you all for putting up with the rambling.

from talking to my mom who already does glas beading you must use the release on the rod cause if you dont you risk braking you piece especially on larger stuff witch sucks cause its gonna be interesting cleaning that gunk out.

i dont do lamp working yet just hot fab but its mostly the same idea. i wouldnt try to wrap it on a metal rod for multiple reasons (it will suck the heat out and cool it fast, cause chill marks, and may be hard to get off). you may be able to get away with it if you get the metal pre heated, but not to hot or else it will stick)

i would use either a graphite rod or a wooden rod (wet). it should slide off the graphite and if it doesnt slide off the wood, it will burn off when you anneal it (assume you will, but again i dont do lampworking yet so not really keen on all of it, if you were doing it free hand you could probably get away with it no being annealed but i personally would do it with the use it will get)

if you use wood get a fruit wood and soak it for a few days to make sure it is fully soaked, also if you can i would try to evenly burn it in before you used it (like soak it well, the evenly char it, then put it back in water) that should make it work better too (also if you dont burn it in you might leave some carbon on the glass that may or amy not come off).
