If your talking about quiklights then you light the coals all the way through so that all the fumes release from the coal before you place it on the bowl. . . this will make sure your hookah doesnt taste like ash

If your coals aren't lit all the way they will give of a nasty taste. Some also contirbute the dreaded "hookah head" to coals that aren't fully lit too.

You do this with any coal not just quicklights.

I've heard the lighting agent on the outside of quicklights that makes them "quicklights" produces carbon dioxide, i think, if you try and smoke with the black stuff still on it. just so the coal is red all around. if you're using quicklights the fastest way to do this is to hold it in front of a fan (:

I belive you should wait for all coals to be fully lit. Ive noticed even exoticas give off some a slight amonia type smell unless fually lit. also if you dont wait for a coal to be lit you will more than likely get a masive migrain or headake due to incomplete combution and the production of carbon dixoide. I actually waite till mine fully ash over. Ide rather be safe than sorry since i already have problems with migrains that steam from a improperly done spinal tap.
