They are sometimes called "Jap Coals" "Silver Flints" "Easy Lite". They need to be lit on a coil burner or stove. There are some very good brands and some very bad brands. They are for the most part better than QL's and not as good as naturals. I have used the Chinese made Japanese style Easy Lites. They were good coals but i hated having to make sure all the silver stuff was burnt off before using them. They smelled pretty bad while lighting too.

I bought some silver flints a long time ago and they were terrible. bad smell, bad taste, silvers stuff got every where and they shattered any time I touched them with the tongs...

The silver tabs/easylites i tried were impossible to get the silver stuff off. Ive never bothered asking why it was on there in the first place but now im curious. They didn't light up well though, and they shattered :/

As dunkel stated, there are some good silver tabs on the market. Abu Hitam are, in my opinion some of the best.I also understand Exotica makes a decent tab.
The silver coating should blow off after the coal is completely lit.(I beleive the purpose of the coating may be to indicate that the tab is infact lit.)

i use silver tabs frequently and i have never taken taken the silver stuff off..... i find that it ceeps all the ash from going averywhere (the coal remains in the tab shape the whole way through) and it has never contributed any taste to the bowl or had any other noticable effects.
