Default Q: Why anise in apple flavors?

Been reading the reviews, and it seems pretty much every apple flavor, for any brand, has anise/licorice flavor? Is there some reason for this? Middle-Eastern taste-bias perhaps? I've never noticed anise-like notes in apples, but then granted I have american taste-bias so I mostly notice the sugary notes in apples. Or are apples commonly spiced with anise in the ME? In the US, cinnamon or nutmeg are common complementary spices for apples.

Just wondering, maybe someone has an explanation and I'll learn something new

Ive always wondered the same thing. Ive never tasted licorice when Ive bitten into any type of apple; although one time I had a "grapple"! Believe it or not, its and apple that taste like a grape when you bite into it. Your can get it at a lot of specialty produce stands. Try one sometime.

AF apple, no anise but slight cinnamon. Golden AF apple, green(sour) apple no anise. It is very big in Mid East flavoring but there are a lot more without it than with it. Just keep looking and you'll find em. Some people swear they taste it in some things even though there is none in the manufacture of that flavor.

It is just Double Apple or Two Apples that has anise in it. regular apple flavor doesn't have it.

double apple is traditionally flavored with anise, it's just the way it's been since the dawn of hookah.

al-waha apple is a good flavor, no anise. i hate anise. it makes the whole session horrible. my mother, on the other hand; would probably smoke it everyday. cause it tastes like gnarly black licorice.

Bahraini Apple also has an anise flavor, not as bad as DA but it's still there. Also Mizo Apple has a big blast of anise flavor.

So the story goes ...

Nakhla developed Double Apple (aka Two Apple) to appeal to the younger generation back in the day. It was one of the first "outside of the box type" tobaccos for a different generation.

Anise may not be licorice, but they taste pretty much the same ..

I love aniseed flavor as well. I also dip a swedish snus that is aniseed flavor nightly.......Mmmmm good. And I think aniseed and licorice are different, to the untrained taste buds they may appear similar but they are most definantly different.

I like Anise's cousin Fennel and I like black licorice but the Anise in double apple is the only Anise I can say I have had and I don't really like it. It is growing on me and I may have to have some to put in apple dishes now cause it just tastes right to me now but my first thought was why does this apple flavor have a licorice flavor to it.

I expected that Sambooka would love double apple since sambuca (and the greek Ouzo) is an aniseed flovoured drink liqueur
IMO its a taste that grows on you and am sure that most of you will come back to it after a couple of years

This was about 6 years ago but I remember when I first started smoking hookah one of the first tobacco flavours I had was Nahkla Double Apple. The first time I had it I thought it was really good I couldn’t taste the anise at all. But after finishing my first box I remember it slowly started to taste more and more like anise each time I had it. I really do not like it anymore and refuse to try it again. So many people tell me they love it and I have wanted to give it another shot but I remember the anise flavour being so overpowering that I couldn't taste apple at all anymore like the first time I had it.

Most likely it's flavored with aniseed oil. Star anise is cheaper than licorice.

I recall hearing that as well although some people claim that the original Al Waha (apparently it's owned by different people now) was the first to make DA that had huge export sales. In any case, something does well in the market and before long everyone tries to imitate the concept.

I don't get it. Real licorice (meaning the herb used in good quality candy and drinks) tastes very different then Anise. Go to a good herbal shop, buy both, make something using the same recipes twice changing only which herb you use and you'll see the difference.

Sort of. The regular line apple, just plain apple, has a cinnamon hint in the background. I have yet to try the Bahraini apple but agree there. And to answer you TheHookahStore they are on in the same actually. Nakhla boxes say Two Apples, other brands call it Double apple, etc etc. But basicaly the very same. And Hajo, they use aniseed to enhance the flavor of some licorice. A quick search on Wiki will clear that one up.

I recall trying Nakhla Mizo apple for the first time and hating it because I wasn't expecting it to have such a strong anise flavor (I really wanted, and still want, an apple-and-only-apple flavor).

Time has passed and I just received a 250g jar of Nakhla Double Apple. It absolutely looks different from boxed Nakhla. I'm looking forward to smoking some tonight
