Default CH Nats Problem

Ok, I've got a bit of an issue here.

I've been using CH nats for a while now, and they were fantastic to start, however, now, tradgedy!

I've let these babies roast on the stove for damn near 15 minutes, and they STILL taste like coal when Im smoking. I'm at a complete loss here, as I know these suckers are lit, they're glowing red hot all over and ashed all the way around.

After 2 minutes of smoking, the bottoms are *completely* black and burnt out.

Help!

I must say.. I have the same problem.. They sometimes look totally lit on the outside but then after a min on the bowl it looks black.. so I have to flip them a few times and blow on them and then after a while they work and then they burn better..

They have done this to me a couple times, I just hold them with the tongs and blow on them and flip them over and put it back on the bowl. works fine. but I usually like to flip my coals every once in a while. Personal prefernce I guess.

The thing with Ch coals you have to store them out of humidy because it really affects the way they light up i use them all the time and never had a problem may be flip them over half an hour into the session. those coals are my favorite

It must be the humidity thing. We're running into the same prob with now and haven't nearly as much in the past. It seems that the further down into the box we get the harder it is to keep them lit. We are keeping them in the box out in the living room but I assume over time they've been affected by the environment. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to store these to keep them in good shape?

We've been throwing them in ziplocks but they have been out sitting for too long. Looks like time for a trip to Walmart for some tupperware

I live in Colorado and we have a very dry weather .... they wok just fine .... by the way, it is normal for charcoals to turn black at the bottom ... just flip them every 15 minutes and u should be fine. Those are the best charcoals I have ever used.

Guys, thanks for the discussion, I think I know what the problem is, this issue has come up a couple of times lately and it's been bothering me. for convenience I have some boxes out of the cases and on a shelve by my garage door. It has been like this for the past 3 months, however the ones that still haven't moved may be affected by moisture or humidity. I will make sure all boxes from now on are hand pulled from the master cases. It seems as though those master cases insulate better than just keeping boxes out for months. I think you will see a change in this in all new orders. please keep me posed of your experiences. Thanks
John

Another thing you might run into, and we just caught this tonight:

our windcover wasn't fitting properly on our new KM with a phunnel and we need to purchase a larger one. The coals weren't getting enough air. we switched it mid-smoke to the qt where it rests on the tray and it was still a little harder to keep lit than usual but they stayed burning longer. Just a warning for someone out there that may repeat our dumb mistake :P

sometimes when that happens to me theres usually the tobacco juice coming from the surfaces of the foil (thats the most common and most apparent problem if the coal dying problem occurs). Also when I put the windcover on when i barely put the coal on the bowl, they die maybe not enough enough air keeping the coal alive? If either of those two problems happen I usually can't revive them so I have to light up another set. But those are a few pieces (3-9) of coal per kg, so its not a frequent problem. Speaking of which, I'm gonna stuff a nice bowl of AF Chocolate (its a nice change of pace) that I got from John right now. Thanks John and good luck HookahWaffle
