Default Technique Advice

Hey there,

This is gonna sound silly but I need some advice on the actual smoking technique. I have never smoked before and me and my husband started smoking hookahs about a year ago. I love the flavours and the whole experience but I find that I can't smoke it without coughing, I know it is not the smoke itself as my husband is quite experienced now so always makes good smoke. Does anyone have any advice for me regarding the correct way to smoke without coughing?

Also, I was wondering if the size of the hookah affected the smoke at all?

I'd be most grateful for any advice as I am aware this sounds quite silly.

Thanks.

try drinking liquids when you smoke so your thought doesn't dry out and make you cough

For one, dont use too many coals that will make the smoke really harsh. You dont need alot of heat to get good flavor and it wont be so harsh. If you get big clouds that could cause it to be harsh. Also your throat could be dehydrated like skatefreak said in the first post, so make sure to drink fluids while smoking. Hope it helps.

Certain foods can make your throat inhospitable for hookah smoke, I was at Cafe 360 and normally i just get an order of french toast and smoke hookah.
Well we decided to try some of this spicy salsa, don't do it!

I couldn't even take a little puff without wanting to die, it completely made my throat unable to stand the smoke.

Wow! Thank you all so much for your advice. I was really unsure of whether or not to post this as I thought it was probably just me being useless but you have all been most helpful. I will definitely try that when our new hookahs arrive this week. Big hugs.

i describe it as being "heavy" smoke.... or a "heavy" flavor. It's not harsh but it still tickles your throat. And my brother has been smoking for a LONG LONG time and he coughs still. If i go for a while without smoking, then come back i'll cough at first. The smoke irritates the membranes in the throat, and normally, when a person smokes, they build up muccus on the throat lining. Drinking liquids immitates the muccus in a manner of speaking, which helps the membranes.

Get a glass of nice, cold water to drink while you're smoking your hookah (doesn't have to be water per se). Then just take a nice big gulp of water before you take a drag off of your hookah and it should help.

hmm if everything is prepared properly and ur still coughing, this is how ur supposed to take in the smoke, or atleast how i do.
Suck in like a straw (inhale while you suck in)
Never Double Inhale its not a cigarette. this should get you nice big clouds and cough free.

The List of Things to do for Setup and Smoking :

1) Properly Pack your Bowl.

Theres tons of videos / articles on the proper way to pack a bowl depending on what you have. (Egyptian / Mod / Phunnel / Vortex). Just make sure you're not overpacking your bowl and giving the moassel good room to breathe while smoking.

2) Proper amount of Heat

Two Coals, Three Coals, Windscreen, its all subjective to what you're smoking. Flavor is a biggie for most people over cloud size, so a little less heat might get you better flavor, but smaller clouds. Make sure your coals are properly lit, otherwise you'll be inhaling carbon dioxide and monoxide, bad for your health, and will make you have one stomping headache.

3) Cold Water and a Clean Hookah

Depending on the bowl you have, you might need to clean your hookah more often or less. Make sure your Bowl Port, Stem, Downstem, Base, and Hose ports are all cleaned on a regular basis. Buildup from old smoke will taste nasty, and standard egyptian / mod bowls tend to let molasses and glycerin drip down inside the stem. Get that funk out of there!

Also make sure you've got decently chill water in the base, it will enhance the flavor, and make the smoke cooler, causing less damage to your throat / lungs.

4) Hoses

Get a good set of washable hoses. The cheapos are fine to start, but a good hose will be the best investment you ever make. It'll keep hose rot out of your smoking sessions, and you can wash out those especially strong flavors (Citrus Mist, Mint, Ect.)

5) Tobacco

Try lots of Brands / Flavors. Some get a better rep than others here around the forum, so experience a little bit of everything and find what you enjoy the best. Not all moassel is equal, and not all moassel is good .

6) Drink a hydrating drink while smoking

Water, Gatorade, Powerade, anything that replenishes the water in your body. Smoking dehydrates you, so make sure you're putting liquid in your body to avoid getting sick.

7) Find a reputable vendor to buy from.

Theres lots of great online vendors, and chances are someone in your area will know a good local shop. A good vendor will steer you away from cheap accessories and moassel, and help answer any questions you have in person (in the case of a local shop). Plus they usually have better prices and will keep your hobby less expensive.

Thats pretty much my list of what I do / look for while smoking.

Ah, all these comments are helping. I tend to be dehydrated most of the time so that could be a reason why I'm coughing, I am trying really hard to drink more water this year. I have also only tried Al Fakher tobacco so this could explain the coughing too. We are going to try to order various brands and flavours from the US this week so I'll get a chance to try a new selection. Interesting comments about the hoses too. I think we need to invest in some good hoses when our funds increase! Thank you angels.

not meant to be bashing but i think HH and HF are lower quality compared to the other tobaccos, the cut looks like cigarette tobacco and it just doesnt have good flavor to me, not bad just not on my short list of smokes

i have been bitten with the nakhla bug lately, consistent, good flavors at a great price and its very natrual and realistic for the most part. i like starbuzz for the more candy stuff but its higher priced and can be hard to get the right heat on it with my bowl/foil/coals, i can get it smoking fine just dont get a whole lot of smoke from it before i get harshness or flavor lost (but the most smoked SB i have is bluemist so that is part of it). tangiers is good but i dont have uber great results with it part due to the weather here and maybe packing but no matter how i pack it i get very little variation on taste but it will be hard on your throat starting out and it seems to hurt my lungs a little the next morning. al waha has been good to me on most of the flavors i tried but its not a go to brand for me (but their cola has been the best i have had)

i havent tried many other brands but i would say to also not bother with havana, its not terrible shisha but its very fake and just not great IMHO
